Very sleepy baby

My 9 day old baby seems to sleep constantly. He only has a few alert periods a day and they're not very long. Just seems to hate waking up! He was born via elective c section at 37+4 due to my placenta starting to fail so not sure if it is just because he was a little early.

He was a little jaundiced but that seems to have resolved. He's now back over his birthweight, breastfeeding well every 2-3 hours at least (often less), including at night, plenty of wet and dirty nappies. So all good signs but I don't remember my first baby sleeping anywhere near this much. Today he woke at 6, fed, back to sleep til 8.30, fed, nappy change, alert for about 15 mins and then back to sleep til 10. Since then he's pretty much been totally asleep except for his feeds and nappy changes.

HV says normal but I just don't remember my eldest sleeping like this!

Early babies do sleep more in the first few weeks. Keep a diary and keep in touch with your HV.

I dont like diary keeping as I'm quite an anxious obsessive person and I find it makes it worse!

HV said as long as weight gain OK and feeding/producing wet and dirty nappies then all was fine.

Has the baby had the thyroid heel prick test done? I don't want to alarm you but my sleep baby, who everyone complained they never saw him awake, had an underteractive thyroid and needs lifelong Thyroxine. He's an adult now and it never caused any problems but it would have if not detected.

Yes he has. It was done last Monday. Haven't got the results yet.

Some babies are just sleepier, oh how I wish mine had been a sleepy one. Mine did the absolute opposite of yours😅

Everyone comments on how sleepy he is! He tends to be more alert at night tbh.
