What jobs earn around 42k

Name300 · 09/08/2024 09:48

Ds is a policeman and he hates it. He wants to leave but feels trapped because he can't think of a job that would earn around the same amount. He does not want to do a desk type job. Also he does not drive.

He did look into train driving but the course/training is fulltime and he would have to give up his job to do it . Which he can't do.

Any ideas ?

How long is the train driving course, and does it guarantee a job at the end of it? If it does, could he save or borrow the money to cover all your living expenses for the duration of the course?

Ayeyourebeingadick · 09/08/2024 09:58

Train drivers need a driving licence according to google!

No its not a guarantee. Also he could not do that he has to pay rent other bills etc . He lives on his own so no one to share bills with . I'm on low income so can't help.

Are you near London - tube station supervisors/managers earn well. National Rail station staff don't earn as much I don't think.

Some kind of trade e.g. plumbing or electrician? There may be more choice of evening courses

Oh he never mentioned that.

Train drivers don’t need a driving licence, however the competition for jobs is stiff and the pass rate is high 90’s in any test to make the cut. That said with working occasional overtime they can comfortably earn over £100k.

XiCi · 09/08/2024 10:09

If he doesn't want a desk job he will need to retrain in something. My DH earns more than that in a manual job but is skilled & has qualifications & experience. Is there anything at all he is interested in re-training in?

jollygreenpea · 09/08/2024 10:09

Being able to drive would open his options a lot more.

Thank you . Its just Impossible for him to even try because of the hours of the hours etc . There's no way he could fit it around work.

Agree with PP if there’s a way for him to learn to drive that would open up many more options. Appreciate he may not be able to if due to health reasons etc.

If I were him I’d look on Civil Service jobs filtered to investigations. If he is a tutor constable or a sergeant he should be able to get a management role quite easily. SEO should be roughly the same salary.

Without relevant skills and experience, probably nothing tbh, he'd be looking at retraining which will always necessitate some time with little to no income unfortunately. It's quite common to get 'trapped' in jobs in this way sadly.

It might be worth looking at something like civil service though as I'd imagine he might have some transferrable skills to avoid having to go in at an entry level there? But they will mostly be desk based jobs of course which you've said he doesnt want to do.

Fire service? Not sure if you need to drive for that though?

Armed forces?

Some kind of training/education/lecturing role if he has a degree/appropriate quals? There are universities that have policing courses.

I don't know. I know he wanted to do the train thing.

I think the main problem is he's sort of trapped because he can't give up his job till he has something to actually go to which also traps him training wise .

He's a PC I forgot what it's called but he went in via an apprenticeship type thing . ( I'm not sure if apprenticeship is right) but he does work the standard job of a PC . But every few months or so gos to uni and has to do long essays etc . But he still earns around 42k. He's not quite qualified yet he has a few months or so to go. Then he want gone ASAP

Can't be true because you can drive trains at 16 now.

No you can’t, not even close. Most train drivers are on half that, overtime at some TOCs is available, but neither guaranteed nor consistent.

Please stop spreading the ridiculous Tory lies.

OP posts:

I disagree with the posters saying not being able to drive is the biggest limiting factor.

I think expecting to walk into a 42k job with zero training or experience is the biggest limiting factor.

So if there's nothing in the same area or that uses the same skills (or if he has other skills he's not using currently that would work), he would have to take enough time to train in something (years) or accept a lower salary until he's at the 42k worthy level.

If he is excellent at selling and gets a role which also has good commission he could probably fast track it, but other than that I'm not sure what viable options would be.

Most people in this situation save until they have enough to retrain or take a loan to cover the training. Some courses you get paid as you are training. I think teaching and nursing both do this. Has he got a degree?

Ds is not worried about that he just wants to earn around the same as he is now . If there ends up a bit more then that's a bonus. He just does not want to loose.

@Name300

Not sure about driving but working for network rail. I know a few in positions earning £50k plus train on the job. They just seem to like to employ ex police/fire. Better once he can drive of course.

madnessitellyou · 09/08/2024 10:33

Trainee train drivers get paid though?

If this thread was about a woman wanting to do something else and the man was a low earner, there would be several posts asking if he can get a better paid job. So, are you able to increase your earnings?

Name300 · 09/08/2024 10:31

Yes, police jobs (and similar) meet a lot of the requirements and give the skills to get through the initial application and testing.

However ex-police now have a higher-than-average rate of incidents on the railway, so they aren’t looked at quite as favourably at final interview any more.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/08/2024 10:34

Learn a trade but he'd probably have to take a pay cut while he serves an apprenticeship.
Paramedic / ambulance technician (once he can drive)
£42k for someone who's still training and doesn't have a degree is a pretty decent salary, he might like to consider how much he really dislikes the job! Also check that he isn't tied to a contract period after he completes his training if they've been funding it.
