What jobs earn around 42k

Name300 · 09/08/2024 09:48

Ds is a policeman and he hates it. He wants to leave but feels trapped because he can't think of a job that would earn around the same amount. He does not want to do a desk type job. Also he does not drive.

He did look into train driving but the course/training is fulltime and he would have to give up his job to do it . Which he can't do.

Any ideas ?

What does he not like about his current police role? Could he look at other types of policing? BTP, civil nuclear police, diplomatic protection?

He's a PC I forgot what it's called but he went in via an apprenticeship type thing . ( I'm not sure if apprenticeship is right) but he does work the standard job of a PC . But every few months or so gos to uni and has to do long essays etc . But he still earns around 42k. He's not quite qualified yet he has a few months or so to go. Then he want gone ASAP

My stepson did the higher apprenticeship and it is hard! Juggling work around the essays and exams. He really didn’t enjoy that part. Once he has qualified and is just doing the job he might find he enjoys it more. My stepson is back in response now but is looking to specialise once he has more experience and I think he will enjoy it more then,

I’m assuming he isn’t on 42k now as he is still training. Is he looking for jobs that have the potential to earn that in the long run?

Tell him to look for work as a signaller for network rail. The pay, and benefits, are dry good. He would have to go to "signalling school" but gets paid whilst there. Can easily move up the ranks quickly and can earn £100k + with overtime too.

Trainee train drivers get paid though?

If this thread was about a woman wanting to do something else and the man was a low earner, there would be several posts asking if he can get a better paid job. So, are you able to increase your earnings?

I'm confused what do you mean am I able to increase my earnings? I think I may have misunderstood

@madnessitellyou it’s the OP’s DS, and she’s already highlighted she’s on a low income.

@Name300 if he rents and lives on his own, why does he need to walk straight into a £42k job? Surely he could terminate his rental contract and become a lodger for a few years whilst he retrains? That would significantly reduce his outgoings.

Scottishskifun · 09/08/2024 10:37

He can check out the offshore industry lots of ex coppers and military in that. Probably along the lines of health and safety reps. He could do his Nebosh in his own time but would obviously have to pay for it. Then see if he can get his offshore certificates etc. Not the cheapest upfront but does pay well.

teatimeplease · 09/08/2024 10:38

New cops aren't on £42k that's what the top need of the band was until the salary uplift, you're looking about 5 years ish for £42k salary- or are you in London? Sorry they might be more

teatimeplease · 09/08/2024 10:39

Sorry my point to that was he won't need to go in to something at that salary right now, he could go in less and work his way up potentially

MiddleAgedDread · 09/08/2024 10:40

If he wants something practical also look into your local water company operations type jobs. It would probably be a pay cut initially but there's opportunities for career progression to team / regional leader and they tend to have good holidays, pensions and decent job security.

No, that's me being daft, sorry!!

Trainee train drivers do get paid, however. Can he work out the absolute bare minimum he needs to pay bills and take it from there?

Someone upthread suggested teaching. There are a few types of training where you can get paid, and some subjects attract bursaries (and of course you are eligible for a student loan).

He does not want to give up his place. Also alot of house shares and simlar are more than his rent is now. I suggested he comes home for a bit. But he does not want to. He really like being totally on his own.

The Police may offer him driving lessons? The Police driving course expects a basic license.

Ridiculousme · 09/08/2024 10:44

How is he a pc without a driving license? Also, it sounds like he’s still a student officer, if he’s doing the degree apprenticeship? In which case, when he’s confirmed he will be on lowest rate pc and have the potential to earn the 42k. How long has he been in?

I work for the police, closely involved with Student officer training amongst other things.

He is on 42k this includes London waiting though . So maybe I should not have said he (earns) 42k but with London waiting that's what he gets .

I know plenty who joined and couldn't drive, they soon learned though

GoBackToPartyCity · 09/08/2024 10:49

The NCA? I’ve just left the police and joined. I’m on 40k at the minute, but going up to £43k imminently.

Ridiculousme · 09/08/2024 10:50

NCA generally look for PIP L2 qualification. The driving is a massive blocker for him.

SilverCatStripes · 09/08/2024 10:56

Is he single ? Can he move back in with you for a while so he can cut down his living costs /save ?

Has he looked at what different roles he can move into in the police , or does he want gone from police entirely, in which case he might have to accept that if he is unhappy in his job then for a better life /work balance then he may be better off taking a pay cut.

I'm going to look at the train thing for hom again. He told me about I have not actually looked . I'm wondering if he missed that he would still earn. I will take a look .

Prison Service he could earn up to that and beyond in an operational management position but I think he would need to start at a lower grade so probably not suitable.

He does not want to move back home.

I have suggested doing something else within the police but it's like he's not hearing me. I think its due to stress. He's basically being bullied at work by management. It's like he's scared of everything. I suggested he requests changing team and he said he has to give good reasons for that and he's scared to. And even if he could the new team would probably have already prejudge him.

Perhaps he should take a look, a proper look, not a 'man look' at pay during training on the railways. It's not going to help him present a good impression to his prospective employers if his DM is doing all the legwork in researching his new career for him. It's embarrassing when that happens with students, let alone supposedly independent adults.

Presumably he currently does some sort of general public facing 'on the streets' policing? Would he be interested in a different role, eg Civil Nuclear Constabulary? There's a few sites in the Oxfordshire and Berkshire areas, also Kent, Essex and Suffolk.

Op, does he actually like anything about policing? Or is it purely the salary? What are his interests or what does he actually like to do at work?

A few pp have suggested civil service - if he doesn't want desk based and enjoys the policing angle, he could consider border force / immigration enforcement / prison officer (although the last one in London would be a bit of a pay cut at £38k ish. Maybe doable depending on his outgoings?)

He does not know I have posted . I was just trying to help . He's hardly going to go to an employer saying my mum told me ..
