What jobs earn around 42k

Ds is a policeman and he hates it. He wants to leave but feels trapped because he can't think of a job that would earn around the same amount. He does not want to do a desk type job. Also he does not drive.

He did look into train driving but the course/training is fulltime and he would have to give up his job to do it . Which he can't do.

Any ideas ?

Has he considered the NHS Counter Fraud Authority? They are always advertising roles in London. I see them frequently on my Facebook feed.

Can I ask what it is about the job that he hates?

I have several friends in the police - & their view of the MET isn't great, so maybe your DS just needs to ride out the training & transfer to a different force once qualified? Being out of London would reduce costs too.

AutumnBride · 09/08/2024 12:52

I'd have thought a transfer within the Met was the quickest way to get out of his current situation and maintain his salary.

lemonyellows · 09/08/2024 13:07

Worth looking into trading standards?

UnionRep · 09/08/2024 13:44

If he has to do a lot of essays - it sounds like he joined through the scheme that means he has a degree in policing at the end of it? A lot of people get the degree and leave - it's a way of getting a degree without paying uni fees basically.
If he is being bullied then it is important to know what form the bullying is taking etc. If it's discriminatory in any way then he should report it. The Met are on such a sticky wicket at the moment they do not want this sort of stuff taking place.
either way - he will be a member of the Police Federation (which is like a union for police) and he should get in touch with them for a chat even if ultimately it means he just wants to get it all off his chest.

I think, unfortunately, he needs to start being realistic. He wants a job with good salary, without having to stick his neck out and without any particular relevant experience or qualifications. He won't ask to transfer within policing, but also won't move out of London or into a house share to save for retraining. But also won't take a desk job where on the job training is more likely.

How far off driving is he? Surely that will give him a chunk of money each month he can then put towards living costs while he's retaining?

My neighbour has a DS in the Army. New recruits aged 18 are now getting a monthly pay of £1800 approx (tax free). Just had a pay rise recently. Well paid roles in the Army for those who are experienced.

Not correct unfortunately.

See previous post in terms of career development and pay.

Armed Forces is not tax free. The only branches of the military where there is any chance of some tax free are the Navy and RFA... but to get that you need to be away at sea for a set time over a 12 month period.

In terms of pay, recruit pay for the army is £18,687 per year before tax. That is £1557.25 per month before tax.

Regardless of previous experience, you start at the bottom and work up. Promotion isn't guaranteed and will be competitive.

Night security. Sit around vaguely watching CCTV and occasionally going for a walk with a big torch.

I stand corrected, just passing on what was said whilst out chatting with my neighbour a few days ago. His DS has leave this week from the Army and got a pay increase.

Trainee train drivers get paid though?

If this thread was about a woman wanting to do something else and the man was a low earner, there would be several posts asking if he can get a better paid job. So, are you able to increase your earnings?

OP is talking about her adult son. Surely she isn't responsible for supporting him financially now he is all grown up and earning a good wage??

(Though I think you may have misread the OP and think she is talking about her DH/DP Grin).

The poster did say she misunderstood 👍

There's not many jobs which he'd just be able to walk into on the same salary as he is now. He will likely need to take a pay cut and retrain or work his way up. There's some graduate schemes which start on that sort of salary but most jobs don't.

Ridiculousme · 09/08/2024 19:54

The Met is massive, he could definitely ask to be posted. Or he could complete his qualification and transfer to another force. All of them are still recruiting currently, and transfers are cheaper than training a student.
