I found a ‘hack’ that works ! Yay

So, I buy strawberries weekly, they are not grown locally but at higher altitudes so frequently not completely ripe (but still delicious and pesticide free) Anyway, I read that you cannot ripen strawberries after picking. Not true ! Place unripened strawbs in a paper bag with a ripe banana. Leave overnight / day. Presto ! I don’t often go along with hacks but I did know ripe bananas have a magic enzyme or whatever and it really worked…..anyone got any ‘hacks’ that work ? Happy strawbs incoming !

They are the easiest thing to grow, then they are fresh, pesticide free and you leave them on the plant until they are ripe.
How do you know the altitude your commercially farmed strawberries are grown at?!

reallifeboogie · 08/08/2024 21:05

My hack.. which I've been doing for years but recently went viral on tiktok by someone else.. I use a potato peeler to slice cheese.

Wahine24 · 08/08/2024 21:08

Bananas ripen any fruit near them that's why they shouldn't be kept in the fruit bowl

Well that may be so, but I have a tiny yard and many many slugs. We haven't all got gardens! 😊

I've grown them in hanging baskets.

If you're feeling nauseous or like you may vomit, place your finger horizontally between your top lip and nose and press down. Basically it looks like your doing a Hitler impression so do not raise your arm at the same time!
But it seriously works. Just do it for as long as needed, usually only a few seconds.
This may not work if you are chronically sick with food poisoning etc. but for mildish nausea/hangover/migraine/anxiety based sickness it really truly works.

Aintgointogoa · 09/08/2024 12:52

@MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira I am not sure quite how high but def in the chillier zone above the plain where the city is. Hot in the day. They are not commercially / industrially grown if you like, it is the indigenous tribe who grow them on many little fincas. I get as much fruit and veg from them as I can.
I hadn’t actually thought of trying to grow them as most things gets fried on my balcony ! Cacti do well 😆
@Fizzadora I am going to look around the market and ask the ‘plant people’ !

@BobbyBiscuits I wish I had known this yesterday. I had to come out of my Pilates as was nauseous. And I frequently have the “nausea/hangover/migraine/anxiety based sickness” type thing esp anxiety. I will resist raising my arm !

@reallifeboogie so do I ! I like the proper Dutch / Danish cheese slicers but peelers def do the trick on the right kind of cheese. It went viral ?!? Blimey.

@Aintgointogoa works every time for me. Looks a bit silly but I could not believe it when someone showed me. I'm always feeling a bit billious through anxiety so it's great!

Leave avocados on the counter / near the fruitbowl till they are perfectly ripe then put them in the fridge and they stay perfect for about a week.

MoodEnhancer · 09/08/2024 13:38

I use kitchen scissors to slice pizza. So much easier and quicker than those annoying pizza cutters!

I've got a giant strawberry plant indoors in a big pot. Hasn't grown a thing.

They grow brilliantly in hanging baskets and it keeps them away from slugs! They don't do so well inside

Hoppinggreen · 09/08/2024 14:19

My "hack" that I read on here but didn't believe was that a full superking sized bed set will fit into 1 pillowcase for storage.
Its true, sheet, duvet cover and 3 pillow cases DO go into 1 pillow case
Bit dull but saves looking for the spare set

Remind me again how I grow them in my top floor flat that has no outdoor space?

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 09/08/2024 14:25

My very own hack was to cut a water bottle in half and use the cap end as a funnel to put oil in my van engine. Felt well pleased as my plastic funnel is in a packing box somewhere in the depths of spider filled garage.

Mine are hopeless. Never produce fruit and just wither away . It's virtually dead. What am I doing wrong?

Do you feed them or just water your strawberry plants? Fruit and veg plants need additional nutrients to thrive. If you eat bananas, you can steep the empty banana skins in water for a few days and feed the water to the plants.

I don’t really no. That’s a great tip about banana skins!
