Bristol riots

We’re due to travel through Bristol tomorrow late afternoon/early evening and I was wondering what the situation is like re riots/protests? For context DD is 13, very obviously mixed race and quite scared of it all. I’m trying to work out if it’s best avoided.

What are you wondering exactly?

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 07/08/2024 19:42

How would we know that??

Whether it’s safe/advisable to travel as I’ve said and equally what the atmosphere is like (i.e. is DD, who is understandably shaken by what’s going on, likely to feel unsafe).

How would we know that??

I suspect that there will be local MNers who might know, clearly not everyone would.

Riots are by their nature unpredictable. Can be peaceful one moment and mayhem the next. I'd guess its taking place in a pedestrianised part of the city? When it comes to travelling through then go via the outskirts? Or just dont go at all?

There is a gathering this evening, but nothing tomorrow. Police have warned in advance about tonight so I assume if they thought there would be a problem tomorrow we would have heard about it already. Not sure if it's kicking off at the moment I need to check!

Which bit of Bristol will you be in?

Thanks so much. Meant to be travelling in to the main train station then out towards the airport via bus early evening (which seems to be prime time for the idiots). Useful to know the warnings are for today.

Its probably worry over nothing and if it was just me I wouldn’t fuss, would just keep my head down, but hate the thought of DD having the witness/be caught up in it if I could get to the airport without having to go into the city centre and back out. I really don’t think people who don’t experience racism realise just how terrifying this all is at the moment for some people.

Old Market area in Bristol has all been boarded up in preparation for tonight's impending chaos. Not heard if anything is planned for tomorrow.

Techno56 · 07/08/2024 19:58

If you are getting the airport bus from close to temple meads then this isn't really the city centre - any issues that happened on Saturday and tonight also are away from this area by quite a bit.

At the moment there's is a peaceful gathering of about 2000 anti fascist counter protestors and not much else yet.

If it's late afternoon early evening I wouldn't be worried. The roads can't fill work protesters then as there will be too many cars!

That’s incredibly helpful thank you!

Same as previous people said, the bus isn't far from the station

I got the train through a "protest" location today and it was fine. Quite a few got off the train to go and join but were obviously avoiding any confrontation before they got there

Techno56 · 07/08/2024 20:02

I've just had a look and the airport flyer leaves from directly outside the station you don't even have to go to the main road. And there are always transport police around up there, so honestly I think it'll be fine and they likely won't be doing anything tomorrow night anyway as it's all going on tonight.

Hope you can enjoy your holiday x

Igotjelly · 07/08/2024 20:10

Thanks guys really appreciate it ❤️

As far as I'm aware all the riots were planned for tonight according to DD and social media

You should be ok for tomorrow

I completely understand your concern abs why you're asking

Ignore PP who seem unaware these are pre planned and lots of people know the times, dates and areas

Tonight they were meant to kick off at 5 pm onwards

It would appear that northern cities are hit hardest and not so much has been happening south or east as yet

LightFull · 07/08/2024 20:20

So these are the counter protestors in Bristol and the 3 EDL that turned up in Brighton

This is really lovely to see

LightFull · 07/08/2024 20:25

There were hundreds of counter protesters in both Bristol and Brighton

No idea re anywhere else

And practically no far tight in either city

Theimpossiblegirl · 07/08/2024 20:27

Even if there is more trouble tomorrow, your route should be completely unaffected.
However, an alternative would be to get the train to Weston and get the airport bus from there.

BristolQs · 07/08/2024 20:32

You’ll be walking out of the station and straight onto the bus on the station approach outside. The airport bus runs about every 12 mins. You’ll be fine.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/08/2024 20:54

Or get the train to Bath (Bath Spa Station) or Keynsham and then get the Airdecker bus.
