Just read this, might help to ease the shopping trip to Morrissons!

www.warburtons.co.uk/our-campaigns/ask-for-ellen/

"All you need to do is ‘Ask for Ellen’ at any Morrisons’ café between 5th and 25th August and you will receive two standard crumpets with a choice of 6 toppings, for free, no questions asked. This summer we have added five additional tasty toppings alongside the normal jam and butter, including marmalade, honey, banana, chocolate spread and maple-flavoured syrup.
This summer the offer is available from 5th to 25th August, and is available to everyone, all day, every day."

It's so stupid isn't it

Nomorecoconutboosts · 07/08/2024 17:44

Perhaps they feel that some people may feel awkward asking for ‘free crumpets’ or other free items such as their package for ‘Sandy’? I’m sure it would be fine to just ask for them rather than the code words

(a bit like when I was at school
decades ago and I had dinner tickets which were for free school meals. Obviously things are more discreet now and children entitled to fsm aren’t given special tickets.)

I never understand exactly what they want you to say here.

Is it "can I have an Ellen please?" Or "please may I speak with Ellen" or what?

Same with the ask for Angela in bars.

Wahine24 · 07/08/2024 18:09

It's advertised in the stores restaurant, they also give away free period products at customer service

InfoSecInTheCity · 07/08/2024 18:16

It's part of a scheme they have run for a few years to ensure that people in food poverty have somewhere to go and get a free filling meal.

It's not a giveaway.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 07/08/2024 18:20

They did jacket potatoes in July (that was ask for ‘Henry’)

according to their website the staff will respond to any mention of the code word e.g. is Ellen in or any similar sentence

Allforareason · 07/08/2024 18:31

My interpretation is it’s for those in food poverty. It’s not “free” food, and as someone not in food poverty I wouldn’t see this as an offer I feel entitled to.
I think it’s a bit like the “ask for Angela” when you’re in trouble on a date.

SoulMole · 07/08/2024 18:40

It's so people that are struggling don't feel ashamed to ask, rather than just being a freebie.
