Where in London?

purpleme12 · 06/08/2024 19:34

I don't have the details of the hotel to hand
Sorry I didn't think I needed to specify
Don't you use to tube to travel around London

OP posts:
Bearpawk · 06/08/2024 19:36

London is huge. Yes you use the tube but pointless recommending a pit stop 45 minutes away in the opposite direction.
Do you have a rough area for your hotel?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 06/08/2024 19:38

yes you can use the tube, but we all know London is a large city !

so not a lot of point in suggesting somewhere lovely in Dulwich if you are staying in The Barbican and the show you are going to is in \Wembley - is there.

purpleme12 · 06/08/2024 19:38

I think it's in Westminster just looked

I know it's huge.

I thought it was normal to travel places

If staying near West End the Sarastro for dinner is great. Or Waxy O'Connors. Really depends which zone you're in.

but do you really want to travel for 45 mins each way for lunch in a cafe ?

purpleme12 · 06/08/2024 19:42

Ok I have stated where the thing is already
Honestly I was just looking for recommendations for things to do/places to go
I'm sorry I didn't put the place in my first post
Please post if you have any

What sort of things do you enjoy? Hard to recommend without a bit of guidance

LIZS · 06/08/2024 19:51

Covent Garden, Southbank? What do you like to do/see?

purpleme12 · 06/08/2024 19:53

Oh yes I forgot about Covent Garden actually

Southbank might be interesting

Are the river tour things worth going on?

Well yes but if you’re at the theatre in the West End, for example, a good restaurant in the east end or the north for dinner might not be terribly convenient.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/08/2024 19:55

Yes, to Greenwich is good. City Cruises guides are a scream.

ToffeeSheep · 06/08/2024 19:57

From Westminster you could go across the river to the Southbank - lots of choice there and further along towards Borough Market etc. Battersea Power Station also worth a visit for variety of shops/restaurants etc. You will also be close to the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery & Tate Britain if you like that kind of thing!

Check out the many many free museums and art galleries dotted across the city!

Restaurants are everywhere you look, and really depends what you like / your budget / where you end up at any given time of day but you will be spoilt for choice anywhere in zone 1 or 2.

Plan your journey, tube is great but look at walking as its less hassle and more interesting. The tube is hell in the heat so take that into consideration.

I'd google a london sight seeing map and plan from there! Enjoy

Leniriefenstahl · 06/08/2024 20:13

We hadn’t been to London for years either @purpleme12
We just did touristy things, walked past Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace etc. We visited the Churchill war rooms which were interesting, Tower of London not so much but everyone is different ! British museum, Tate modern and National gallery, all really busy and a huge queue outside the BM. We booked all our evening meals in advance, got recommendations off old MN posts and trip advisor.
We used the tube a fair bit, can just use your bank card to pay without getting tickets which was great.

purpleme12 · 06/08/2024 20:20

Thank you 💞

What is better to do
London eye or river cruise?
London eye is so expensive!
River cruise can you see a lot from it?

From Westminster pier you can get an Uber boat to Greenwich for lunch. The Plume of Feathers is a beautiful pub from 1691 next to Greenwich park and does good food. Or there are plenty of other eateries including a new cafe in the park - Ignatius Sancho and the flower garden circular beds are horticultural heaven.
Whatever you do enjoy!

purpleme12 · 06/08/2024 21:38

Does anyone know what the best river cruise is?

PandoraSox · 06/08/2024 21:40

If you are staying in Westminster and like Indian food, The Cinnamon Club is worth a visit. It is in an old library and the food is great.

OlympicsFanGirl · 06/08/2024 21:41

I was in London last weekend.

We did city experiences open top bus tour and Thames cruise

We got cakes in Harrods and had a picnic Hyde Park

I'd also recommend the Tower of London

For restaurants I just used google to find places near to the theatre for dinner.
