I know people live there and go about their work and lives but I'm concerned now re how volatile the situation is and our train goes through something tough areas.
Am I being silly, we're were supposed to see all show

As someone who grew up in London in the mid-70s where bombs were threatening and then went on to work in the armed forces, my advice is to just keep your wits about you - which you should do whenever you're travelling anyway. These riots are just another way of "terrorising" normal people and goading the government of the day.

Go about your business, don't let it worry you. You have very (very) little chance of coming across any riot!

Londoners are fabulous folk!

SquirmOfEels · 06/08/2024 21:01

SKY is reporting “police sources say they are aware of 30 gatherings planned for tomorrow on what is expected to be a “big day” of disorder”

That is concerning.

Not seen any news/commentary re Thursday, and I expect everyone is taking it a day at a time.

I doubt it would kick off in central London, though. No obvious targets except Whitehall which will be well protected. There are loads of public transport options so I wouldn’t be worried about trains being unsafe as I don’t think they’d reach a critical mass

mumto2teenagers · 06/08/2024 21:10

I live in the suburbs and travelled to East London yesterday and today for work, the riots didn't cross my mind.

You will be fine, go and enjoy the show.

mondaytosunday · 06/08/2024 21:35

My 19 year old travels to central London most days. No concerns here.

RiotsLondon · 07/08/2024 10:10

@Raveonette it's the journey in I'm almost more worried about than central ish London (aside form the tube)

If something kicks off I think it should be fairly easy touch wood to get away.. But if agitater of either side are traveling in or out to suburb areas that could be worst trapped on a train with drunk aggressive tooled up thugs.

@SquirmOfEels

I could be wrong but I'm seeing lists of towns and cities and they seem to be targeting immigrantration services. Hotels housing migrants , solicitors etc

My friend is a detective in the met police and he said he has been told to expect things to happen in London from today. So personally I would avoid it if possible, which of course is very hard for people who live there. I am very much a blitz spirit sort of person but given what he has said to me, I definitely would avoid any unnecessary trips into London at the moment as they are working on intelligence they have received.

I also work in the NHS and we had an email round yesterday advising people to avoid going into London based on intelligence they have been told about. So I'm guessing this is coming from somewhere quite high up.

RiotsLondon · 07/08/2024 11:37

@Boxina thank you, do you know if that's just for today?

I don't know sorry. I'm due to go in on Friday afternoon and I'm not sure what to do.

Balletdreamer · 08/08/2024 05:22

London is huge. Even in central it’s quite possible to be near a protest and not know anything about it until you get home and see it on the news later.

Zanatdy · 08/08/2024 05:51

Personally I would as central London isn’t on any of the lists anyway. I went the other day with my daughter and everything was perfectly normal. If you’re anxious about it just delay until another time

Noverdict · 08/08/2024 06:13

Ridiculous, not just silly.
avoid living; you might die.
avoid drinking; you might drown.
avoid eating; you might choke.

Noverdict · 08/08/2024 06:14

gosh you were brave. Hope you had someone to hold your hand.

Noverdict · 08/08/2024 06:16

Be daring. Risk mixing with the other 13m terrified Londoners also fearing death on Friday.

Noverdict · 08/08/2024 06:18

If worried, try Beirut or Baghdad instead. Or live dangerously and risk London.

Noverdict · 08/08/2024 06:19

Best way to avoid the risk is don't ever leave your house. The sky could fall on your head so don't risk it.

I'm not going to Walthamstow, I'm pointing out that unfortunately this telegram thing is organising people in various spots.

To be fair I guess London is one place that does have decent police numbers.

It really doesnt but not part of the question!

I was in town yesterday and it was fine. Saw lots of British Transport Police on my commute too. Felt very safe. Dont miss out!

Imaginaryhairstyle · 05/08/2024 23:08

It feels very safe here in London. I don’t think there has been any rioting here? Speaking as a lifelong Londoner the anti immigrant racism that is behind this behaviour elsewhere in the country is thankfully not a strong part of our city. We are an international, multi cultural centre with a Muslim mayor.

if you’re travelling in for 50 minutes then you are presumably not very far away? Honestly I’d rather be here than anywhere else in England right now.

This. I keep thinking how scary it would be to be living outside of London right now.

OP I travelled to london and back yesterday from much further away (think way over an hour) for a pre-booked event having almost cancelled as Wednesday was apparently going to be the worst night of the riots and everything was absolutely fine no issue at all. I say go for it

Minikievs · 08/08/2024 07:30

@RiotsLondon I'm also going to london today, 54 min train ride in. It didn't enter my head to be worried tbh. One of the DC got upset last night (we are going to see the TS exhibit at V&A) because of what happened in Stockport but I told them that in my opinion London was one of the safest cities at the moment due to the amount of police presence.
I hope you have a lovely day

Meadowwild · 08/08/2024 07:35

Putting · 05/08/2024 22:59

They’d be waiting for hours for the getaway train!

LOL. Yeah, hope they are not planning to come in via SW trains. They cancel 50% of the time because the trains don't feel like training that day. Or there's a blade of grass on the line between Wimbledon and Vauxhall.

greengreyblue · 08/08/2024 07:37

London is a big city! Go. You are overthinking.

Abra1t · 08/08/2024 07:37

My daughter works in a hospital in a deprived multicultural London borough and hasn’t even mentioned seeing anything going on.

Meadowwild · 08/08/2024 07:37

I am currently working away from home in a major city. My boss told me the massive riots allegedly planned for earlier this week (I didn't notice when as I was at work) consisted of about 100 anti rioters and no rioters, so everyone went home and had a lovely evening instead.

RiotsLondon · 09/08/2024 09:57

Update : very smooth, unscary journey in and out of London
We all had a fabulous time. Thanks to those for their reassurances.
