I know people live there and go about their work and lives but I'm concerned now re how volatile the situation is and our train goes through something tough areas.
Am I being silly, we're were supposed to see all show

I'm not going to Walthamstow, I'm pointing out that unfortunately this telegram thing is organising people in various spots.

To be fair I guess London is one place that does have decent police numbers.

But it's miles from Central London. You have no need to go anywhere near it.

Izzynohopanda · 06/08/2024 10:04

Went on Sunday. Not a problem.

If you don’t like the tube, consider walking. Central London is smaller than the tube map suggests.

What "situation"?

The less than 5000 people nationwide throwing a bit of a tantrum who are already simmering down? You're being absolutely ridiculous

While I agree we should be keeping personal risks in perspective, I don't think we should trivialise the impact on asylum seekers, Muslims and those from minority ethnic communities in areas which have been targeted. They attempted to burn people alive in hotels, threw bricks at Filipino nurses and have desecrated graves. This was deliberately organised, and is also based on a long-term propaganda campaign attempting to blame all this country's problems on immigration.
Luckily in many areas fewer people turned up than hoped by the organisers, but part of that could be that the 'trigger' they chose to instigate race riots was misplaced since the Southport murderer was neither an asylum seeker nor Muslim. If I lived in an area that's been attacked and was from one of the communities targeted, I wouldn't be thinking it's been a trivial 'bit of a tantrum', I'd be scared and traumatised.

RiotsLondon · 06/08/2024 10:12

@LifeofBrienne thanks for that info that's what I was hoping for whether anyone had that that sort of Intel.

Where they are targeting etc. That's why I mentioned Walthamstow.

@RiotsLondon I assume you will arrive at a mainline station so are in Zone 1. You will then be travelling in to the centre e.g. Leicester Square/Covent Garden area. As pp have said a bus or taxi to your destination will give you peace of mind.

The Tube Map is deceptive in central London the stations are close together but further out they are more spaced out. Walthamstow is about 13 miles from Leicester Square.

edwinbear · 06/08/2024 10:54

I live in a rough part of SE London, no issues here at all. I was in the office in central London yesterday, no hint of riots, I'm also in the office on Thursday and it hadn't crossed my mind not to go. I'll obviously reassess if things change, but it's not on my radar at the moment.

Duckingella · 06/08/2024 11:07

I'm also travelling to London on Thursday for a show

caringcarer · 06/08/2024 11:44

My son did tell me lots of thugs arrived in Hull for so called protests by train. Not sure what is supposed to be happening Thursday though.

LBOCS2 · 06/08/2024 11:47

Up to this point, the entirety of the 'riots' in London have consisted of planned demonstrations outside Westminster which turned violent resulting in 110 people being arrested.

London is hugely multicultural and the majority of residents will turn out to protect their local community in the areas they're planning further protests; this is why they're having to travel in to do it and it's not happening organically.

Avoid the areas there are potentially going to be issues. London is 607 square miles - it's BIG - and none of those areas are near central where you'd be going. I really wouldn't worry.

Peonies12 · 06/08/2024 11:51

Of course it’s fine.

MistyMountainTop · 06/08/2024 12:21

No sign of any riots at Bank ot Liverpool St

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 06/08/2024 12:49

Are you coming in from Suffolk? So into Liverpool St station and onwards to the West End. The train doesn't even stop en route other than possibly Stratford.

You might see some excitement in Westminster if you keep going west but central theatre district is very unlikely. Thugs would need their sharpest elbows to get through the tourist crowds and wave a flag/fist.

I would crack on. There are approx 1,400 police officers in the whole of Suffolk versus approx 35,000 in London. They are well trained in handling and containing trouble makers. And there's always Boris's water cannons which could be put to good use. Horrible things but I'm not feeling particularly empathetic to rioters this morning

OlympicsFanGirl · 06/08/2024 12:51

I am just back from a weekend in London - no issues
DH is heading to London this week for a few days with work - I have no concerns.

Just keep an eye on the news.

OlympicsFanGirl · 06/08/2024 12:51

I always think these threads must look like crazy talk to the 5 million plus people who live and work in London .

They do.

We don't really know where the next protests are springing up.
All maybe fine until rent a mob moves into one of the suburbs.

Yes, but then you are living your life in fear of what might happen and you are more likely than others to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. There might be bombs too, or covid or some random nutter up to no good.

It's much more likely you will just spend a small fortune on mediocre food, treats for the kids and [in my experience] their favourite part of the day will be the tube ride.

And if it all does kick off there will be 35k police officers and millions of non racist Londoners [wondering WTF with these bigots] who will help you out.

Lastly and this is pretty cynical. The riots are targeting refugee housing/hotels in the main. Central London is not an optimal location for this sort of housing because it would cost a bleddy fortune. That's why the Tories shipped the poor refugees away from London to the north primarily because it's cheaper and ignored the potential for local unrest especially when local councils were then [to the best of my knowledge] told overnight that they had to find the money out of existing budgets to keep it all going.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 06/08/2024 16:03

Also, if there is trouble at a tube stop/outside a tube stop then they often close the station and send the trains straight through. Deeply inconvenient if you'd rather take your chances but there's no arguing, they just turf you out at the next safe spot. Useful to have a tube map downloaded on your phone as signal underground is flakey.

But you’re not going to the suburbs.

You can catch an express into Liverpool Street. On the Central Line. Straight to the West End.

Boater · 06/08/2024 16:43

Although there are maps on every train too so it’s never that hard. TfL staff are generally extremely helpful too.

The far right have no chance in our communities. Bullies don't like it when they're outnumbered.

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea

Countries have added the UK to their 'careful to travel lists'? Which countries ?
Australia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Indonesia and increasing numbers of other countries are primed to follow suit, especially those with a large Muslim population.

Sweden and Norway too. I’m sure most European countries will follow suit unless they already have.

RainintheDesert · 06/08/2024 20:48

I live in London. I'm still doing everything I normally do. I lived through the 2011 riots here and found it mildly irritating, but that's all. Honestly, come anyway, we're not (currently) rioting here.

Raveonette · 06/08/2024 20:49

I live in the suburbs and am going into the centre on Friday with DC. Not worried at all.

RainintheDesert · 06/08/2024 20:56

Actually tbf to the OP anytime something BIG happened like a terrorist attack or the like, I'd suddenly get text messages from my family in the Shires saying ARE YOU ALL RIGHT? and me, sitting on my sofa reading a book, would reply, yeah, why? HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEWS. XYZ HAS HAPPENED IN LONDON and there's me five miles away in my flat in SE London. People forget that the near nine million residents of London are not all in Zone 1 at the same time and that London is MASSIVE.
