Edinburgh travelodge!

Lj8893 · 05/08/2024 16:30

Just about to book a trip to Edinburgh. Never been before so am clueless!

Going cheap and cheerful so booking a travelodge but there are a few central ones, which is the best location for us to book?

We will be mainly just wandering taking in the sights, shopping, bar hopping.

Queen st
rose at
St Mary’s st

Bonus points for any other tips and pointers, extra bonus points for late night chilled bar/pub suggestions!

Currently sat in the premier inn on rose street. Really happy with location - close to train station, castle, everything really. We’re at the back so very quiet as far as I can tell. Kids here so that is important for us! Very busy but a good buzz. Lots of pubs and restaurants in an easy walk.

Lj8893 · 05/08/2024 20:14

Ah I am so excited! DH is getting annoyed at me shouting all these suggestions out 😂

The grassmarket is a nice area to wander to for pub visiting.

Lj8893 · 05/08/2024 20:19

does Anyone have any suggestions of somewhere nice to have a late night drink? Like 3am?

I love Hey Palu on Bread Street for cocktails- I believe they’ve opened a tequila bar down at the Shore too but I haven’t been there yet.
Cocktail Geeks (really close to Saint Mary’s Street) is fun too- they do themes every three months or so like Jurassic Park, Mario, GoT. The cocktails are good too!
And Moo-Pie Gelato on St Mary’s Street is delicious, highly recommended for a walking around ice cream!

BriceNobeslovesMurielHeslop · 05/08/2024 20:24

@Lj8893 sorry- for some reason I thought you’d gone for St Mary’s Street. Rose Street will have a few options for later night drinks, I think.

Lj8893 · 05/08/2024 20:26

No problem, cocktail geeks looks good so we shall definitely wander there.
Hoping the weather will be ok so we can just wander and explore!

Hoot the redeemer is always good for a cocktail.

Lane 7 in the St James has darts, bowling etc.

Fayre play is an activity bar.

I like the Cowgate and Grassmarket for a wee pub crawl, usually live music somewhere, reminds me of my youth!

There's a gaming bar on Lothian road if you like that sort of thing (my son and his girlfriend like it)

Brewhemia also seem to have stuff on a lot.

Chez Jules is amazing for a cheap delicious lunch, best to book

Fucketbucket · 05/08/2024 20:38

If the weather is nice (possible in September, you never know!)
Grab some cans of cocktails from M&S and some picnic food (there's entrances to M&S from Rose St and Princes St) and sit in the Princes St Gardens.

Ginkypig · 05/08/2024 20:52

Have you looked at motel one as a hotel option?

I put my mother in law up there and she said it was nice. At the time I booked it wasn’t much different price from premier inn or travel lodge. Don’t know how much it would be now.

it right at the bottom of cockburn street (at the top of Cockburn street is the royal mile) and at the end of Waverley bridge so view over princes street and the gardens and right next to the train station. So it sits directly between royal mile and princes street.

Ginkypig · 05/08/2024 20:55

Sorry I just saw you had already booked 😳

Is that the one that is hidden from the street, like a speakeasy?

I think so. It looks like a barbers shop from the outside somehow. I was very confused when we arrived. I was with my sister and she knew how to get in!

Yes it looked lovely but £100 more expensive!

Gotta be Fingers Piano Bar

😱🤣 No seriously don't go there without me

Ginkypig · 05/08/2024 22:44

If you like Indian food you absolutely must go to mother India’s cafe!
the food is great!
I go semi regularly when visiting a family member.

it’s tapas style so each dish is probably starter amount so order probably two things each plus rice and bread if you want a (biggish) main amount and it comes when it’s ready.
If I go I don’t get rice I just order two dishes and bread which for me is pretty filling but easy to order more if not enough.

I had the afternoon tea at the Signet Library last week and it was the most amazing thing I've ever eaten.
