So I went swimming yesterday, water got into my ears and now my left one is blocked. It feels full and it’s pretty uncomfortable.

I am susceptible to getting blocked ears and probably get my ears microsuctioned once a year.

I’ve booked to get them checked out later to see if they are actually blocked with a view of then getting microsuction later this week after putting olive oil in for a few days.

However I’ve never used olive oil before microsuction so wondering if I can just see if I can get a microsuction appointment today- or should I use ear ol spray that I have first?

urgh it’s the worst feeling in the world!

My husband gets this every time he swims. He tried the earol last time and it worked within a couple of days.

I find sleeping on the blocked ear helps (gravity pulls the water out). Also hair dryer gently on/neat the ear. I try to avoid getting water in my ears as I also hate them getting blocked.

Sorry no idea about the olive oil. I tried it once, I think it's effective if you have hard wax.

Having been seen by ENT earlier in the year, I'm now very diligent about using earplugs for every swim, bath and shower.

Have you tried bending your neck and shaking your head vigorously? It's a bit hard to do but usually works for me once you get the water pressure hitting the point of least resistance.

noidea098 · 05/08/2024 08:02

I tried sleeping on it overnight and it made no difference. I think the water has dislodged some wax 😔

I had this from a shower. Nothing helped. Eventually I got an appointment at my doctors to see the nurse. She irrigated both my ears
Absolutely fantastic. Coul hear right away. I pit up with it for over 4 wks.
It was bliss. It was a bit tickle but pain free.

neveradullmoment99 · 05/08/2024 08:11

It was on the nhs. Check if your surgery does this. Its likely your wax has impacted if you can't clear it.

My husband used to always get this after swimming, but since he bought a rubber bulb irrigator he is able to sort it out straight away.

I use a spray for trapped water (loads on Amazon) but presume you can get in boots etc. I use most days and after swimming as I am prone to infections. I haven't had an infection in years now!

noidea098 · 05/08/2024 10:19

So it feels less blocked but now a bit painful? Especially under my tragus area. Is this sign of an infection? I am going for a free ear / wax check later…

Random and probably pointless but if you're at the point of trying anything... do a headstand (against a wall if needs me) or anything else that keeps your head upside down for a few mins. Always works for me I guess it's the pressure

noidea098 · 05/08/2024 13:13

The pain seems to be getting worse and is spreading down to my upper jaw…

For future use you need Aqua Ear - it’s just alcohol ear drops that remove the water and prevent swimmers ear. When you get water in the ear you just put some drops in, it feels a bit weird/nice, leave it for a couple of minutes and tip your head the other way and it all comes running out and is THE nicest feeling ever.

I ended up sleeping with cotton wool in my ears after this happened last week, and finally at 6am was woken by a gurgling as it finally leaked out into the cotton wool.

Wow I bet that sounded amazing!

noidea098 · 05/08/2024 14:21

@Ozgirl75 oh that sounds good, thanks.

omg @BogRollBOGOF i bet that was sooo satisfying!

I am wondering how the water has caused wax to block my ear. Or if the water is still actually in my ear which microsuction won’t get rid of?

So apparently my ears are blocked, and I am getting them micro-suctioned later this week. Still have pain though in my ear though…
