Panelling - am I mad or should I just do it

About 10 years ago we had a very old fashioned stairs with a dado rail halfway down the wall. We ripped it all off and had the whole stairs re plastered.

I keep looking/seeing panelling on stairs. We live in a mock Tudor house from the 1920’s so it would probably suit. I hate our stairs at the moment as it just looks so boring. With 5 year old twins it’s taken a bettering in recent years and definitely needs redecorating.

so am I mad to consider panelling or have you done it yourself and loved it?

Don’t.
I’m actually avoiding viewing houses if I see on RM they have this awful fake panelling.

Unless your walls are completely straight I would avoid.

We did it about 25 years ago. As we got to the end of four incredibly frustrating days, DH wrote on the wall before putting the last panels in place 'Now you can see why we panelled the bloody thing!'

Sometimes wonder if the panels are still there or if they ripped them off and found the message...

I actually think the panelling that’s popular at the moment looks really nice, it adds a traditional modern twist to sometimes very plain modern houses, and a lot of 1920s houses had panelling, so it wouldn’t look out of place, so yeah go for it. But the old fashioned stairs and dado rail you had ripped out, was that the original from the 1920s? If so I hate it when that happens, though it is your house, would a dado rail not look ok again, if you’re sort of ready to embrace more features again?

Oh god no definitely not original

it’s such a large stairs, hallway and landing area, the amount of panelling that we’d need would be so expensive so that puts me off.

You can do it fairly inexpensively with mdf kits. There are lots of videos on YouTube as well.
I'm not one to jump on interior fashion bandwagons, but I do actually quite like the look and I think it looks nice and adds interest if done well.
