Ideas for kids on a camping trip??

pinacollateral · 04/08/2024 06:48

Me and DH are a childless couple, going camping with our friends - 2 couples and their kids - in a few weeks' time.

We really love the kids, but don't see them that much - we want to get them some little gifts for the trip, but not sure what to get!

The kids are ages: 1, 4, 7, and 13.

Does anyone have any ideas of some little gifts we can take for them?? Probably no more than around £10 for each child.

Something to do on the trip would be good.

Eg

  • posca pens to decorate beach stones if you're near the beach?
  • colouring or craft books/magazines
  • beads to make things out of or hair braiding stuff
  • skewers marshmallows and biccies to make s'mores
  • beachy stuff eg a snorkel, bucket n spade, inflatables etc

A frisbee never fails me on a camping trip with the kids. A small kite is also hours of fun if you have the wind.

QueenOfTheNihilist · 04/08/2024 07:07

Stomp rocket

Not bubbles. Bubbles are bad for tents.

I always found with my kids it was good to have a little down time when camping - we also got them a magazine or a new book each.
Also if it is hot water pistols are fun.

Kite
Ball

Do they have head torches? So many people camp without them but they are excellent and you can get child specific ones that aren't very expensive.

SpinningTops · 04/08/2024 07:19

I have just come back from camping with a 5 and 7 year old.

SpinningTops · 04/08/2024 07:20

Sent too soon. These would be brilliant for the 2 middle ones

And waboba silicone frisbees are great and soft but fly well.

@catchingzzzeds Nooooooo!

Please no bubbles around tents!

The detergent isn’t good for any tents and very bad for anyone who has a cotton canvas tent .

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/08/2024 07:42

Ours love Swingball when camping.

catchingzzzeds · 04/08/2024 07:44

@QueenOfTheNihilist yes I'm aware not to use them around tents!

winewolfhowls · 04/08/2024 07:54

Posca pens are a definite winner!

Trampoline tennis set, nice and soft!

FlyingontheGround · 04/08/2024 07:55

Card games like Uno. Marshmallows with skewers for toasting. Bat and ball, a frisbee, a torch, buckets and spades if you’re near the beach. Camping is so fun for kids of all ages.

pinacollateral · 04/08/2024 07:58

Thank you all - some great suggestions here!

I think the 4 and 7 year old will definitely be covered with some of these :)

Anyone got any ideas specifically for the 13 year old and 1 year old? (both girls)

OP posts:
Sonolanona · 04/08/2024 08:23

One year old..won't care, but stacking cups or bricks or similar... or a little bucket and spade (doesn't matter if you aren't near a beach!) as they love stones, muds etc.
13 yr old.. I'd get a little makeup kit if they are girly ( or likely to brood in her tent 😂) Or a good book.. (can recommend Percy Jackson series if she hasn't read them yet!) or a cheap badminton set if she's outdoorsy.

Sonolanona · 04/08/2024 08:24

PS .. that's really sweet of you!!!!

(also if the middle ones are boys... hot wheels, or foam swords.... always popular!)

ohrwally · 04/08/2024 08:30

Hoola hoop

Skipping rope

Bat and ball set

Rounders set

Giant connect four

Colouring book and ones / actively sticker book

Go down the summer garden aisle in the supermarket and see what outside stuff they have that would be great to play with while camping.

Not bubbles for camping - can damage tents

Lovetotravel123 · 04/08/2024 09:01

The 13 year old might like Exploding Kittens (card game) if they don’t have it already.

NCfor24 · 04/08/2024 09:06

We had a colour in picnic blanket for the kids which was great. They could all work on it at once.
Maybe a pop-up inflatable ball pond for baby or treasure basket idea with things to discover... Although when mine were small they loved playing on a silver emergency blanket and crinkling it, playing peepo etc - £1 shop.
Camping last week and boomerang and bat and ball were played with constantly.
