What's the best olive oil? I like to use it in cooking but it's been so expensive I haven't so now I'm going to treat myself.

Cold pressed virgin is best. It’s a bit like choosing wine. All down to your palate.

Check the labels , shop around.

Take a bottle home, do a taste test. Keep buying the one you like,

I find Aldi’s own acceptable but I’m no connoisseur and I have to budget!

I use standard olive oil for frying marinating, rubbing etc but for dipping or dressings I use first pressed belazu which is expensive yes but oh so good

Depends what you are doing with it?
Salads extra virgin
Cooking standard olive oil (extra virgin has low smoke point)

Whatever you do buy one in a glass bottle not plastic.

Great thanks. So I want it for cooking. In pasta sauces mostly.

The best for me is whichever Extra Virgin one is on sale!

TheBizzies · 03/08/2024 15:19

Also some are grassier than others it all
depends on your taste! Did you know there are actually olive oil sommeliers?!

I normally get whatever standard one is on sale for cooking, but Felippio Berio is probably the one I get most often.

For dipping and dressings, I get Odysea Orgsnic Greek Extra Virgin.

Buy it in green or brown glass as it loses some of its polyphenols if in clear glass and they are the things that are good for you. Also check the date, don’t buy anything over 18 months. I use extra virgin for everything as well as cooking.

I would never waste my olive oil on cooking

I just use it in salads

LightFull · 04/08/2024 18:22

Greek is best imho but more expensive

LegoTherapy · 04/08/2024 19:05

I've just swapped to extra virgin due to regular olive oil often being refined. Cold pressed is great.

When the price of oil started rocketing I looked at switching from extra virgin to cheaper olive oil, but as far as I can see the extra virgin from Aldi and Lidl is already as cheap as olive oil gets in this country. Maybe it is different in olive oil producing countries. So I still use extra virgin for everything.
