Any hotel stays recently? Sometimes its handed over and not given back in error. My dh lost his and after many retracing steps he phoned a hotel he had stayed in months earlier. They were 'oh we wondered when you were going to notice'. The assholes, they had his number on file. There were enough days to deliver it home.

Check all suitcases handbags pockets in the house even those normally used by others. Its easy to shove it in DCs bag or someone else's when your hands are busy travelling home from the airport.

I know. But I had covid right after, as in tested later that evening cos I felt awful, then we had a heatwave so no coat since.
yes, straight home as I didn’t feel great. Coat would normally be in the hall. It’s not there, or my bedroom or the car…

This is actually good news as you are now looking for something bigger. Did you actually bring your coat home? What would have happened if you'd left it whereever you went?

Now visualise the colour of your coat very clearly. Imprint that colour on your brain, and walk the house looking for that colour.

OneNimbleFish · 03/08/2024 16:24

I use a folder, with birth cert, passport etc together

Domoda · 03/08/2024 16:25

Coat left at voting location, with passport in pocket? Can you give them a call to see if it's there?

reallywhywouldyou · 03/08/2024 16:27

Double check your coat isn't hanging under another one

Catopia · 03/08/2024 16:37

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/08/2024 15:53

So, I had it to vote. I’m thinking coat pocket…. Now I can’t find my coat. Any ideas?

It sounds like the coat is a good candidate if you can't find it either... It was quite a hot day, did you def have the coat? Did you keep the coat on or did you carry it? If you were feeling unwell, were you feeling cold, may you have left it on, hence why is not where coats usually are, and then gone into another room? Hanging on a hook on the back of the bedroom door or something like that if you went to lie down? Hanging in the wardrobe because you decided it was no longer coat season?

Delatron · 03/08/2024 16:47

I remember voting day as I was dressed up to go to an event and it was quite warm - I definitely didn’t need a coat (I am in SE though). Did you take the coat off whilst voting as others have suggested? Sounds like you felt ill and that affected thought process!

I do think it’s in the coat. I would call wherever you voted and see if it’s in lost property there.

Howmanysleepsnow · 03/08/2024 18:40

Well, I’ve found the coat, in the ironing pile. No passport though…

reallywhywouldyou · 03/08/2024 19:33

How did you get to the polling station, did you take a handbag, walk, etc?

Comedycook · 03/08/2024 19:36

Sorry don't want to rub salt in the wound op....but there are always threads like this. Why are people so blasé about their passport? Ours go straight into our safe as soon as we get home. I'm totally paranoid about losing them or them getting damaged in some way

ouch321 · 03/08/2024 19:40

I think I've found myself a new job.

Official finder of lost passports! There seem to be so many on mumsnet.

I actually would do this for a fee. I think it might be easier for someone else to find it. In the same way it's harder for you to see your own errors in a piece of your own writing.

distinctpossibility · 03/08/2024 19:43

The coat is in the ironing pile as it's been washed. Therefore, you took the passport from the pocket when you put it in the wash and it's near the washing machine or washing basket.

NomenNudum · 03/08/2024 20:39

In the coat lining

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/08/2024 20:40

Have you got a home scanner/copier? On the glass.

Its2024happynewyear · 03/08/2024 20:40

Glove box of car

weirdoboelady · 03/08/2024 21:05

Freezer is often the place of last resort....

I like the 'you put it in the pocket of what you were wearing at the time' theory of when you washed your coat or put it in ironing pile, though.

ElizaMulvil · 03/08/2024 21:34

Do you have a rack or other container in the hall which you may have put it in? Has it fallen down the back of the hall radiator or bookcase?

Go outside with your coat on and come back in with something in your hand. What would you do with it before or after taking off your coat?

I’m definitely not blasé. It lives in my jewellery box and has always been put straight back there before. I have no idea why I didn’t put it back there this time, other than illness. I’ve had covid twice now and can confirm that hypoxia and delirium definitely affect my decision making. I remember being utterly exhausted after voting, but not much else. About an hour later my sats were 90% so that might have impacted. Or maybe I put it away as usual and moved it later, but I don’t know where or why.

Glitterandglue · 04/08/2024 02:42

If you drove to vote, glove box, centre console or door pocket in the car? Any bag you might have been carrying? Any other clothes you might have been wearing with pockets?

In a pile of other 'deal with that later' things (speaking from experience...)?

avignon1234 · 04/08/2024 03:25

I was about to say "scanner" (so easy to do)
I think at the polling station. Call them. Don't call the passport office, they will just cancel it and you will have to start all over.
Do you need it for ID (e.g. buying alcohol) , if no, you are back to that night. Washroom. Car (or bag you had on that night) is most likely. Before you say "no, not in car" please clean your car within an inch of its life, I lost my wheel locking nuts that I swore to god were always in my car, even knew which little storage compartment I put them in and was faced with a very expensive "sorting out", if I could not find them. Could not find them. Much later, cleaned car properly and they had made their way out of the compartment with a bit of vibration, and dropped between the seats - really invisible to anything other than the most thorough of cleans (seats up the lot) Coat linings are also a thing. My experience of lost passports (and god only knows with 4 kids we have had at least that number, at great expense) is you have to decide when your time is up, and what your options are. Don't sit on it - we are in peak travel period and you may find your local office has no appointments for the next week. We are reasonably close to our local one (40 miles), but I cannot describe how I felt going for yet another emergency appointment for Child 4 recently (aged 18) lost passport with only 5 days before travel, after being there for Child 1 (twice), Child 2 (once) at an alarming cost. Sorry, I have rambled on, but I have been there too many times to not know how it works. Good luck xx

StarlightLady · 04/08/2024 06:47

OP. When did you last use it? Was it for non travel purposes. I once had to take mine to a bank and on return filed it with bank statements/papers. And l’m always meticulous in where l keep it and always put it back, or so l thought.

Deathraystare · 04/08/2024 08:14

24 hours before going to Malta with a friend I rang her in a right state. She managed to talk me down. I found it in a magazine rack!

The next time I could not find it, got a new one than ages later took a backpack out of the wardrobe and there it was!

I now keep it at work in a locked drawer as , if i need proof of id on a form I can use that.

Catopia · 04/08/2024 08:16

Next to the bed/sofa/down the back of the sofa cushions if you came in, took it out of your coat pocket then went and collapsed somewhere feeling poorly with it still in your hand?

Comedycook · 04/08/2024 08:19

You need to search one room at a time. Working from one wall to another... searching all furniture, bags, pockets etc you come across as you make your way across

Ohmych · 04/08/2024 08:22

Good luck I hope you find it. Kitchen drawer before you washed your coat?
