COMPETITIVE DANCING FEES

Bugs Bunny Money GIF by Looney Tunes

Hi!

sorry if this has been asked before. I did search numerous words for this but couldn’t find anything.

my child attends a private dance school. Her terms fee is just under £300. That is for mandatory classes including competition classes.

if my child wants to learn a solo/duet/trio we must pay an additional £30 per hour with minimum 3 hours to learn these new dances.

all of the above is fine.

competitive dance is not cheap. However we as parents pay what we need to for costumes, getting to the comps, comp fees, spectator fee’s, accommodation if needed etc. again, all fine.

my child has been in the comp team for 3 years now. And only now is the dance teacher / owner demanding we as parents pay an additional £5 per child, and £5 per spectator per competition for her to attend.
there is 50 children in the comp team. So she will make £1000 per comp just to attend.

is this normal? Baring in mind, her own child is also in the comp team, therefore if she was not the teacher/owner she would be attending these competitions anyway.

is this normal? Do all dance teachers add additional costs onto comp fee’s for their attendance. Also baring in mind she has said if she does not go to a competition then the children can’t go (we have asked before if our kids can compete without her there if there is a competition they would like to do but she hasn’t added it to the comp season diary)

thank you for reading and any responses. I have tried to explain to the best of my ability! 🥴

My DDs do a different type of competitive dance. Their teachers rarely go to comps and it's normal for the dancers to be with just their parents.

If my DDs are going to dance with their teachers we pay a hefty fee for their time etc. we only do that a few times a year.

It's a ridiculously expensive hobby. My DDs love it and are very good. But I honestly can't afford it. It makes me cross that so many DC don't get the chance as the cost is so high. At the international comps (hosted here-we don't go abroad for comps) the competition from oversees all gets their expenses paid for by their countries government. I think that's partly why they are so bloody expensive. It doesn't help the British competitors though.
