OMG, why didn’t I / we do it before?

The loft ladder, loft floor put in and shelving all around. No more monkey acrobatics trying to get in and out of the loft, from a too short fold out ladder, fetched from a garage on a cold wet dark December night and then needing to go back. It smells fresh of wood like a log cabin.

It’s like a new sanctuary - spending spree tomorrow for clear boxes and already 2 bags of clutter to take to the skip, it’s not going back up.

What has been your absolute house update revelation, big or tiny?

We used to have a big loft with ladder. Was a great size for storage. Only part boarded. My son was up there looking at old toys for his kids. Walked onto an unboarded bit and part fell through ceiling below! Unfortunately, I didn't see it as he dragged himself back up! His wife and my daughter did to great hilarity!
Converted garage into an extension of our kitchen/breakfast room to create a kitchen diner with a seating area at the end for a sofa and coffee table . Also created a storage room/larder with a cupboard installed for the boiler.
My son's garage was converted into a spare reception room. Now used as his office cum toy room.

Our new fridge freezer is wifi enabled. I genuinely could not see the point, but connected up to it anyway. About a week later I was at work when the fridge sent a message to my phone to say the freezer door had been left open. One phone call to teen DS (the culprit) saved a freezer full of food. I am fully converted to WiFi appliances now.

Spiders - I haven't ever been up in the loft, I've literally put my phone through the hatch and taken photos as I'm worried it will be swarming with spiders.

How do all of you get rid of the spiders so you can use the loft?

Do they all come flooding out of there whilst the work is being done?

Really quite worried about this.

Spider invasion 😱

Didn’t have the swarming out, and never really seen one up there. I assume they are living under the boarding now, out of sight out of mind.

I'm happy if they are underfoot - it's living in the rafters and dangling down / falling on my head/ head going through cobwebs that I'm most worried about.

I daren't even think about looking up, I just imagine the rafters are full of them 😬

@Trenda those drawers are fan-bloody-tastic. The space under our stairs is the cellar, full of junk

In my new kitchen I have three double floor cupboards with deep drawers rather than doors, so much more accessible than cupboards and shelves.

I kept the cutlery drawers and now have three, one with cutlery, one with all my spices in a rack and one using a cutlery insert for foil, cling film, greaseproof paper, plastic bags and various bag sealers. I feel so organised!

This is my mission when I replace my kitchen. More drawers, less cupboards!

We have 3 drawers in my kitchen currently and 8 cupboards. The cupboards are massive, but only have 1 shelf in the middle and no means to install more, so there is a good 6-9 inches of totally wasted space in each cabinet.

Also tempted to use the under cupboard space. A friend of mine had kickboard drawers installed under her cabinets and they look genius for the things that you don't use too often, but need to store somewhere.

The best things I've bought were a water softener - we live in a hard water area and limescale was a nightmare, now no more, except for the kettle (tap in kitchen has to bypass softener - and a removable loo seat: so much easier to clean!

Same. We had one installed on Week 1 of our new build for the same reason. Has made appliances last so much longer and bathrooms still look great.
