OMG, why didn’t I / we do it before?

The loft ladder, loft floor put in and shelving all around. No more monkey acrobatics trying to get in and out of the loft, from a too short fold out ladder, fetched from a garage on a cold wet dark December night and then needing to go back. It smells fresh of wood like a log cabin.

It’s like a new sanctuary - spending spree tomorrow for clear boxes and already 2 bags of clutter to take to the skip, it’s not going back up.

What has been your absolute house update revelation, big or tiny?

One of the first things I did after divorce was install a loft ladder. Ex had always claimed that no room to do it . Then I bought interlocking wooden floor tiles from B&Q and laid them across joists so a solid base to put things on . Got rid of all the random junk he had there that I didn't know about .

Also live my waste disposal unit . Peelings ,scraping off plates all just washed away.

I really miss having a waste disposal unit. They are the most useful things ever.

We don’t have wall cupboards in the kitchen either. We’re lucky, the kitchen is 20x10, half of which is the table, a lazyboy sofa opposite a big tv for cinema evenings that don’t disturb the neighbour because there are 3 walls and the stairs rather than being up against the dividing wall in the lounge.

We’re also lucky to have a big utility with 3 double units, sink, loads of room for the washing machine/dryer. The kitchen pretty much sold us the house.

What’s a lazy boy sofa?

Replaced my 50/50 fridge/freezer with a 70/30 one. Love the extra space in the fridge and haven’t minded having a smaller freezer. I have a cheese shelf now and woe betide anyone who puts the cheese on the wrong shelf. I even have a use up shelf too so nothing gets wasted. It’s lovely for when I am entertaining with all the extra food you need. And my freezer has less random frozen stuff that I haven’t a clue what it is.

Not eating until 12noon. It’s really liberating to ditch breakfast. Saves so much time, storage in cupboards etc.

RubyDarke · 03/08/2024 21:27

Cordless vacuum

Floor to ceiling food cupboard / pantry with internal storage to access everything easily

Simple plastic waste bin for recycling in every bathroom and bedroom. No more piles of toilet rolls on windowsills and keeps all recycling dry and separate from general waste.

How much work/disruption was it to enlarge the small loft hatch to a bigger one? Ours is tiny but the hall/ceiling is decorated so DH is cautious about the idea due to the damage it could cause…

Portable air conditioner - can actually sleep at night when it's hot and I don't spend the summer months tired and irritable

Snap

Numsmetposter · 03/08/2024 23:43

Portable air con. Some half price in argos last week. I purchased the £175 one, hose out the window. Have seen a hose conversion kit on amazon which is just a detachable cover for the window opening, to have it ajar with the hose sticking out.

Room was too cold yesterday!

I bought the pull out drawers for kitchen base units, they just stick with extra strong tape to the original shelves. No more scrabbling to reach tins at the back of the cupboard, just pull out the drawer & get what I need. I've put them in every unit, even the ones that go into corners, I've just put things I never use, but don't want to throw away in the corners. Made a spice & herb drawer instead of having a miscellaneous crap drawer, I bought square jars that fit in the drawer for everything & a label maker to put labels on the lid, it's the drawer next to my hobs where I would most likely need the spices while cooking. Everything bought from Amazon.

These look great especially as they don't screw in.

But the key I've found to the ones I have (even though they don't look anywhere as nice) is that

  1. They have high sides so you can get more in there
  2. They are divided & you can move the dividers eg I have a narrow one for lids then a wider one for the containers they fit
  3. They pull all the way out

I'm sure you could get the effect same using some containers that fit those drawers snugly and have straight sides, if you wanted.

I can't see anything similar in the uk but these are the ones I use :

https://www.kmart.co.nz/product/wide-and-high-roller-storage-compartment-42576808/?sku=42576808&gadsource=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwqre1BhAqEiwA7g9QhlR98cbPnsxvOHMzF7NwnVsj74e6OQ5Uiix9X2MLL7cJaDge6SwQvxoCCqoQAvDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Getting high sided & as deep as possible has been great for me. Also pull everything out and see what you need and definitely decluttering as you go.
E.g. I use one of the for the packets of pasta, rice etc in the pantry and just chuck the packets in there:
https://www.kmart.co.nz/product/narrow-fridge-organiser-with-handle-42970637/?sku=42970637&gadsource=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwqre1BhAqEiwA7g9Qho3uvKXP9qreAoa72IJj77bijwHvHgGgbm4PjHomga7-pRipTlEiPhoCi9EQAvDD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Also good in the fridge is to have one of the mini tiered shelf units that you usually use for tins. And a square turntable. So much stuff out there, just need to find what you need

What’s a lazy boy sofa?

The brand, it's basically a recliner sofa, we have the leather version so it's wipeable.

@whatsuplittle It was £1,956 incl. VAT - this covered work, materials, everythIng. It was done by Access4Lofts Shrewsbury - I believe they are a nationwide franchise. Could not recommend local fitter highly enough.

That's great to hear about Access4Lofts as I've just got my quote and am now waiting till Monday till my local rep is back from holiday to confirm my dates for work.

I'm just getting rid of my lazy boy sofa set, I hate them as since I moved, they have never clipped together properly. I'm buying a 1 piece static sofa set instead.

Mine's a one piece electric recliner, heavy as hell!

Greytulips · 04/08/2024 07:27

We have recliners, too easy to fall asleep on! 💤

2Old2Tango · 04/08/2024 07:30

That is my dream OP. Our large loft is crammed with junk and 'stuff' from 34 of living in this house. I'd love to empty it and board it out and add a loft ladder. I'm 60 now though with some mobility issues, so not sure it will ever happen. I intend to declutter but not sure about the rest.

CalmConfident · 04/08/2024 07:43

Bought an extra set of quality cutlery for everyday and threw out the odd jumble of forks & knives we’d accumulated over the years.

A really small thing but means when the dishwasher is full we still have decent matching flatware to use rather than random stuff!

@Nat6999 that sounds genius but can’t picture it! Any photos or link pls?

We took out the triangle shaped under stairs cupboard that was so hard to use. I saw an advert for pull out drawers and DH used his Diy skills to adapt the idea to our needs. So instead of a large space used only for random rubbish and the vacuum cleaner we now have
A tiny pull out section for light bulbs and candles.
A pull out for diy/tools chargers
Taller pull out section for coats etc
final section with a door for vacuum cleaner and any random things that dont fit anywhere else.
Each pull out section is on casters and apart from some shaker style knobs the front is flat so it looks like a flat painted wall.

Understairs cupboards
Not mine but very similar.

Converted a little used hardwood double glazed conservatory into an orangery kitchen with a tiled roof..

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 04/08/2024 18:45

Plantation shutters , every room in the house. No curtains at all.
They are sleek, clean , good insulation, go with all decors and I will never have to worry about curtains again.

Mochudubh · 04/08/2024 18:57

@Trenda

That's ingenious.

We have the type of stairs that do a 180 half-way up. There's a door to the cupboard under the upper part but I can never get in to the lower part as it means crawling through all the crap and under the half-landing. That arrangement would make everything so much easier.

itwillnotopen · 04/08/2024 19:06

Utility room! We coverted part of our garage and I love it- more space in the kitchen as there's no washing machine there now, and no more laundry drying all over the house. We also have three full height cupboards in there so loads of storage, and a second fridge for drinks.
