OMG, why didn’t I / we do it before?

The loft ladder, loft floor put in and shelving all around. No more monkey acrobatics trying to get in and out of the loft, from a too short fold out ladder, fetched from a garage on a cold wet dark December night and then needing to go back. It smells fresh of wood like a log cabin.

It’s like a new sanctuary - spending spree tomorrow for clear boxes and already 2 bags of clutter to take to the skip, it’s not going back up.

What has been your absolute house update revelation, big or tiny?

Over time I've invested in loads of storage for the kitchen. We have lots of cupboards which are so impractical so I bought high sided rolling storage boxes. Best recently was a shelf which goes on the back of the door which is perfect for drink bottles especially. So good to get them organised.

Something like this

This is genius! Straight into the Amazon basket, thanks!

@Nat6999
I bought the pull out drawers for kitchen base units, they just stick with extra strong tape to the original shelves. No more scrabbling to reach tins at the back of the cupboard, just pull out the drawer & get what I need. I've put them in every unit, even the ones that go into corners

Could you recommend/link to these please? I've looked on Amazon but there's so many options it would be great to have a recommendation. Thanks!

These are the ones, they come in different sizes.

@whatsuplittle It was £1,956 incl. VAT - this covered work, materials, everythIng. It was done by Access4Lofts Shrewsbury - I believe they are a nationwide franchise. Could not recommend local fitter highly enough.

@2PinkCrocs we had our hatch expanded as part of this renovation. The ceiling looks like it was always there, no damage. The work was done over 2 days - on day 1 9 am - 2 pm to increase the hatch, fit door and ladder and lay the floor. On day 2 shelves and lights were fitted 9 am - 12 noon. I worked from home throughout, made the fitter cups of tea when I made my own, he covered stairs and landing with dust sheets and vacuumed up after. It was like elves at work.

The power-operated, rain sensitive velux window in my kitchen was the single best purchase when we renovated our semi-derelict house 15 years ago.

My biggest regret is not doing the same in the attic bedroom, and just putting in manual ones. The carpet has been soaked more times than I care to remember due to me forgetting to close the attic windows when it rains!

You can get rain sensors retro fitted to velux windows

IKEA cubes for shoes. ❤️❤️❤️

MovingSwiftlyOn · 03/08/2024 16:53

Oh and IKEA Vareira shelf for my cupboard under the sink. All my cleaning bottles were too high for either top or bottom and sink waste got in the way. All fits beautifully now and gives me joy, every time I open the door.

How much work/disruption was it to enlarge the small loft hatch to a bigger one? Ours is tiny too but the hall/ceiling is decorated so DH is cautious about the idea due to the damage it could cause…

Found the photos.

@skippy67 can you? Can you really? Oh my goodness, that is incredibly good news. I’ll look into it straight away!

mydogisthebest · 03/08/2024 17:06

We had a new kitchen last year and we have all drawers except for a cupboard under the sink and a larder cupboard

Some are deep drawers and some shallower. It's so good just pulling the drawer open and being able to see everything in there rather than trying to see what was in the back of the old cupboards. Also no more bending to get things from the back of cupboards

We’ve had a loft ladder for about 20 years now. One day - any time soon - we’ll actually install it … 🤣

(Bought it in last house, moved with it 19 years ago, still not in.)

27 years here.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/08/2024 17:24

We had a large 2nd bedroom, and a tiny 4th, next to each other. Dh removed the stud wall and put in a new one to make them more equal sized - 4th is now much more usable and 2nd is still plenty big enough for a king sized bed.

Though why the builders didn’t do it in the first place I will never understand.

Portable air conditioner - can actually sleep at night when it's hot and I don't spend the summer months tired and irritable

Which one do you have please?

Soonenough · 03/08/2024 17:38

One of the first things I did after divorce was install a loft ladder. Ex had always claimed that no room to do it . Then I bought interlocking wooden floor tiles from B&Q and laid them across joists so a solid base to put things on . Got rid of all the random junk he had there that I didn't know about .

Also live my waste disposal unit . Peelings ,scraping off plates all just washed away.

Davros · 03/08/2024 17:43

I love this thread. I wish I needed a loft ladder now...

HideousKinky · 03/08/2024 17:46

We renovated our kitchen including knocking through to the adjoining room which is now a spacious dining area lined with fitted shelving - I absolutely love it and it has somehow opened up the whole house making it feel much more connected

HideousKinky · 03/08/2024 17:47

mydogisthebest YES! drawers not cupboards - so much better!!

NotEvenSlightlyReasonable · 03/08/2024 18:00

When we had our utility redone I put in a little telescopic drying track over the sink. Now I have somewhere to dry drippy handwashed bras when it's too wet to put them outside. So small and cheap and so useful! Also have a powered, rain sensitive Velux out there and it's brilliant.

Definitely air conditioning units, in the bedrooms, absolute game changer, don't worry about the weather being too hot now, and comfortable nights sleep.

We desperately need a solution to cooling one bedroom which is south-east facing and gets dreadfully hot for a few weeks in the summer.

Do you have double glazed windows and if so, how does the air conditioner unit's vent tube fit through the window? I've not seen a conversion kit yet for our type of window (a standard double glazed PVC, with a single side opening like this one below)?

its funny how we put things off that will make such a big difference.

loft ladder and flooring and loft light have changed my life (well maybe not but Christmas is a lot easier😂).

next on my list is the broken door bell!

Yes, so so much better. Makes me wonder why cupboards have been so popular.

@Easilydisturbed
.....installed a long run of the Ikea storage units which hold all the shoes.....

Would you mind showing a picture? understand if not. Sounds like a solution I could use. Thanks.

They are the Ikea Hemnes ones, this isn't my hall, I pinched it from the internet but gives a good idea. Ikea have them in different heights, widths and colours

I want a loft ladder now

InfoSecInTheCity · 03/08/2024 20:20

Our loft board was a bit more expensive but we got them to insulate the whole lot and add a breathable membrane to the inside of the slopey bit to stop dust and debris falling in between the roof tiles. New bigger UPVC hatch telescoping fixed ladder, grab rail at the top and the boarding was £2995
