Tips for car boot organisation please! I've just got a new (to me) car which is immaculate inside. Prev cars have very much been workhorses.

I have 2 ds, under 10. Bikes, buckets, spades, wellies, body boards, also animals (ponies) so need to put water containers in the car. I really don't want to trash the inside of this car.

I'm a single parent, work, the car is LOW on the list.

I always got big back seat and boot covers that sort of clip on to the hardware your car has and then everything just gets chucked in. Boot bags kept in the car so muddy boots go straight in those. Big canvas bags for any other crap.

Realistically it's still impossible to keep it completely clean (outdoorsy kid, dogs and horses here too) but the covers will do a lot of the heavy lifting!

Then a quick hoover of the car every now and then.

(And a small level of acceptance that long term New Car Smell is not something I am to be blessed with)

Tarpaulin covering the boot.

Seat covers.

All muddy boots etc off before sitting in the car.

Lots of plastic and Ikea bags to hold wet/dirty things.

Towels.

MidnightPatrol · 02/08/2024 09:44

Giant ikea bags

Porridgeislife · 02/08/2024 09:45

We had a boot liner made by Titan Covers. We paid extra for the bumper flap. All dirty things (bikes, shoes etc) go in the boot. Make sure you take a second pair of shoes with you if going somewhere muddy.

Get floor mats for front and back seats.

I also don’t allow snacking in the car which is probably quite controversial.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/08/2024 09:46

I don't.
It's a thankless task, as I work on building sites too.

PVC tablecloth as boot liner. Wellies off/Crocs on before getting in the car. Big ikea bags, but bits damage limitation at best.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/08/2024 09:48

Also, rubber floor mats. I've got the ones specific to my car model, so they fit closely.

Why keep the car clean ?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/08/2024 09:50

You get one of these and put bikes, buckets, spades, wellies, body boards, and kids in it.

Keeps the car nice and clean.

@midgetastic that's my default mindset but it gets so that even I can't tolerate it. Also, when you've enough damp muddy stuff in the car, it develops a smell. That I don't like. I also work in an office. . .

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles hmm and keep it permanently hooked up? 🤣

Thanks all for the suggestions, I guess cars are really important to me, and I just need to accept a certain level of grubbiness.

Kids do snack in the car, abd that's a big issue I'm getting them involved in car emptying /clearing too.

Boot liner. Plastic bags/bin bags to put muddy stuff in.

Seat covers and rubber floor mats. I have rubber mats that I use in winter and swap them out for the other ones in summer but you could keep them in all year round.

Eating in the car is one of the worst things for making it grubby. Tiny bits of crisp will work themselves into the fabric and you will get greasy hand prints everywhere. If you can stop eating in a car it makes a big difference to keeping it clean.

Floralnomad · 02/08/2024 10:40

We always keep big plastic boxes in the boot and everything goes in them , also take any rubbish out of the car every time you use it

Ineedanewsofa · 02/08/2024 11:02

No food in the car, only water to drink, wipe clean upholstery or seat covers, heavy duty boot liner, bags for life/ikea bags lined up in the boot to throw things in.
keep antibac wipes in the glove box to clean as you go

Bemyclementine · 02/08/2024 12:21

@MonsteraMama thanks, I've ordered the boot liner in the large size. I do want to keep on top of it a bit more but its a lot when you get hone after work/clubs/yard with mucky hungry kids! Car isn't new new, so no new car snell. I'm sure it'll soon smell of something!
