Ice cream on holiday

If you were on a sun holiday how often would you allow your kids have an ice cream or treat? Just curious, am having a disagreement with DH here.

Daily, maybe a few times a day if we could afford it. It’s a holiday and in the sun 🤷‍♀️

What?? You would feed your kids sweetened, mprocessed crap a few times a day?
Aside fromnthe health crap, mwhere is your concept of a 'treat'?

Yep.

It's fine.

They don't eat two ice creams every day.

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 02/08/2024 06:02

Normal rules don't apply on holiday, an extra ice cream some days and lazing about reading sunds pretty good to me.

Maximum once every other day.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/08/2024 06:14

Tween boys can get chunky in preparation for growth spurts. I have a girl but I remember seeing the boys getting bigger at 11/12/13 then going up and out. Idk if this is the case for your ds but unless he is really overweight, I wouldn’t worry about it.

And in your shoes there is no way I’d let your dh have his own way on the ice cream.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 02/08/2024 06:15

I had health obsessed parents and always went on super active holidays when I was growing up - and I still remember doing one in the Lake District on a scorcher of a summers day and managing to get three ice creams out of it Grin

Generally I think 1-2 a day is fine on holiday. If your DS is overweight then number of treats should have been discussed and agreed upon in advance.

llamajohn · 02/08/2024 06:28

I'd be letting DH explain to DS why he can't have an ice-cream today.

QuantumPanic · 02/08/2024 06:30

Controversial - as an adult I wouldn't have ice cream once a day. It's so much sugar! I'd limit kids to a small scoop once every other or every third day (the latter seems less achievable though 😅).

I had three yesterday Grin

Perfect28 · 02/08/2024 06:35

@QuantumPanic what's the problem with the sugar?

I'm team every day, and not just on holiday.

Itssamemario · 02/08/2024 06:38

Nip your husbands comments towards your son firmly in the bud right now.
He'll give the poor lad a complex that could last for life. A throwaway comment is enough to do serious damage and could land him with an eating disorder.

I know I sound hysterical but it's true.

HaveYouSeenRain · 02/08/2024 06:44

Once a day. Twice and one of them is a big one is a bit OTT. You are teaching them to binge on holidays.

Ds is overweight, I admit this is a big problem and we have chatted about changes to be made after Summer. He didn't quite realise how big he is until he stripped off a few days ago. The weight gain has been recent and sudden. I've genuinely been worried and talked to DS about cutting portions a little to make room for treats but I need to seriously address it, I just thought we could park it til after the holiday.

Yeah put your head in the sand. You are not doing him any favours. Do some parenting and limit his junk food intake. Your DH is right

Depends. In the UK less often than if
abroad

What difference does that make?

Glad to hear it. I think once a day but today it was twice, a mid afternoon treat and again for dessert which was late and near to bed time. Dh is furious with me because I said yes and 'encouraged' it. He is saying they will have to have none for another day to make up for it. I admit yesterday's ice cream was huge, far too big for kids but I thought what the hell, we just won't go to that place again. I don't drink cocktails in the middle of the day at home either! Holidays are for breaking rules IMO.

Ugh. It's a holiday. Adults indulge on holiday. Nothing wrong with it. Your DH sounds ridiculous

MoobyMoo · 02/08/2024 06:54

Food should not be used as a reward or a punishment. No food should be seen as a “treat”. It should all just be equal.

Your attitude towards food will be the reason your DS is overweight.

Nothing wrong with eating ice cream, but lots wrong with viewing it as a treat.

TemuSpecialBuy · 02/08/2024 06:54

Prob one a day
My dd is active and not overweight i would feel differently if she was. I was an overweight child and it has overshadowsled most of my life.

GoFigure235 · 02/08/2024 06:55

Your DH is behaving unhelpfully. Your DS is still very young and the burden of losing weight/being more active shouldn't be put on him - discuss it if he wants/needs to, but otherwise quietly make the changes that are needed without being negative to him. If your DH thought your DC wasn't being active enough, he should have suggested a fun activity that they could do together rather than getting at him.

astarsheis · 02/08/2024 06:55

One ice cream and one fizzy a day whilst on holidays. My kids still laugh about it now.

OP herself said she didn’t realize her DS had become so big. I think one big ice cream a day is plenty even on holidays.
