Ice cream on holiday

If you were on a sun holiday how often would you allow your kids have an ice cream or treat? Just curious, am having a disagreement with DH here.

Well we are currently in Italy, so every evening.

Kids shouldn't be on low carb diets.

They’re 21, 16 & 14. They’re missing no nutrients that are only found in high carbohydrate foods, they’re healthy and a hell of a lot slimmer, fitter and happier than some of their peers.

Cram junk before cracking down after the summer, that’s not a great attitude to be honest. Not dissimilar to a binge. I’m with your husband - in fact seeing the responses on here I can understand why we’re in the midst of an obesity epidemic! My kids aren’t mentally disturbed and don’t feel deprived from not having ice cream, snacks and treats every day on holiday. They do have a treat every few days and they appreciate it more than just having junk on tap. Food at home is low carb, a small amount (think one square of chocolate) for pudding and food ‘off plan’ is few and far between. No weight or food issues in our household.

My son eats what he wants, when he wants- we don’t have any food rules- just a house full of food from salad to haribo, all kept where it’s accessible. No weight or food issues in our household.

No, none at all by the sound of it ☹️

NewDogOwner · 04/08/2024 12:26

We go all inclusive so unlimited ice cream. In effect, it's never very much.

It’s a great existence - reversed PCOS, had three children because of that, no guilt eating meat and dairy, no diabetes, no autoimmune disorders, my husband no longer suffers from reflux which caused Barrett’s. Much better than the alternatives I’m seeing in family members and friends!

A 21 year old eats ONE SQUARE OF CHOCOLATE?

Fucking hell

My 4.5yo would eat far too many sweets and chocolate if given free reign. I tried the "anything goes" approach, she only wanted sweets and chocolate from the moment she got up until bedtime.

So now it's a choice of 1 sweet treat a day in general, and she can choose to have it whenever she wants (eat a little bag if haribo with your boiled egg for breakfast? No worries, go ahead, but then that's it)

She has pudding sometimes and if we go out and have a bit of cake or something, no worries. And she might have a bit of home baking with a packed lunch etc

No, he rarely eats it - prefers other options. But it’s up to him now, I don’t make his meals. Why is there an assumption that everyone loves to and should shovel chocolate all the time?

Well I have no guilt eating meat or dairy, no Diane, no AI disorders ,no reflux, not over weight, no high BP.... Yet info have doughnuts/ an entire six squares of chocolate/a couple of biscuits/a piece of cake etc most days.

I went on an all inclusive holiday with a friend and her 4 y/o. It was a battle to not let him have ice cream at breakfast, or before eating his dinner! I would say it was at least twice a day.

Why does it matter if he has his ice-cream at breakfast? Makes no difference if it's eaten at 8am with some porridge or at 3pm by the beach??

Lol you are right, and definitely no difference to a 4.5 year old. Just a bit odd to me as an adult 😂

IamMoodyBlue · 04/08/2024 14:41

Definitely never more than once a day.
At home ice cream is a treat.Maybe once a week? Having it every day is a special holiday treat. But not more than that. It ceases to be special. Starts to be expected, which is not a good idea.

@Marchingonagain ditch all UPFs, especially seed oil but make sure DS gets enough animal fats

Sorry is this a typo? I presume you meant the opposite but I'm now questioning all my knowledge about food!

Oh dear I was wildly quoting some research I’d read and now can’t find. It was talking about the tiny little cells (beginning with m??) that our bodies are made from and that they need animal fats to function properly. I understand that unprocessed fats from peanut butter, coconut, seeds, nuts etc are fine but the refined seed oils found in UPFs are a big problem. I’m so sorry to spout off and not be able to back it up properly!

Marchingonagain · 05/08/2024 19:32

And my understanding is that the biggest problems with sugar are caused by issues essentially piggy backing on the back of the bad fats…
