Can you smell rain?

Just sat in the office and people were commenting on whether or not it has started raining yet as it has suddenly gone very dark here. I said that it hasn't but "I can smell it coming" and everyone looked at me like I was bonkers! Another female in the office agreed with me but no one else has any idea what we're talking about.

Anyone else able to smell when it's about to rain??

Interesting. I don’t think that I can smell rain but I can definitely sense it.

LoneHydrangea · 01/08/2024 21:45

Petrichor. (Which I recently discovered my otherwise intelligent 21 year old thought was pronounced ’Patricia’ 😮)

Best smell in the world.

JennyfromtheBlok · 01/08/2024 21:48

Yes. Rain and snow

FictionalCharacter · 01/08/2024 21:49

I absolutely can, and snow too, which smells completely different.

Cherryblossom81 · 01/08/2024 21:51

Yes. I also thought this was normal?! I just assumed everyone could smell the smell?

mewkins · 01/08/2024 21:51

Yes! And my kids can too so I assumed lots can. Especially noticeable in the summer.

Chypre · 01/08/2024 21:53

Yes. Rain, snow and lightning. Not sure it is actual smell though, probably atmospheric pressure fluctuation felt somewhere around nose blood vessels or something. Also night time smells different from day time.

September has a very particular smell. I definitely smell seasons.

Yes, a 'back to school' smell.

Straightouttachelmsford · 01/08/2024 22:01

Exactly! I still associate that smell with going back to school and I'm old now. :-)

GreatTheCat · 01/08/2024 22:07

Yep. On a sunny day I got a headache at work and said out loud that rain was coming. 20 mins later it came and my boss was amazed.

newfriend05 · 01/08/2024 22:11

Yes definitely especially today

OMGsamesame · 01/08/2024 22:11

Yes. It smells sandy

BornLippy88 · 01/08/2024 22:13

I can only "feel" rain coming, there's a certain quality in the air. I can definitely smell snow though. It's been a while though

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/08/2024 22:24

I thought everyone could smell the weather?

Being able to "see" the passage of time is time/space synthasesia. For me days are linear - stretched out like ribbon and years are cicular like a clock or a wheel. We are currently at the one o'clock position.

Betty789 · 01/08/2024 22:36

I can smell rain, and can feel thunder coming after a hot day.
Someone upthread mentioned feeling sensory heightened with thunderstorms- I definitely get this and when I was less ancient thunder used to make me feel very...frisky...for want of a better word😂

Ruelzdontapply · 01/08/2024 22:43

Can't smell it coming but has soon has a drop hits I can

poppym12 · 01/08/2024 22:55

Yes. Rain before it arrives and snow (not the same smell). I get awful migraines when a thunderstorm is on it's way too. Lately I've noticed that any change in barometric pressure seems to trigger a headache, even low to high.

I'm so glad I'm not alone to have colours with the smells. Smelling rain is seen as weird but walking outside and saying something like "it smells baby blue/yellow/green/grey today" is apparently very weird to my husband.

I have colour associations with days, months, letters and numbers too.

I love how synaesthesia is different for everyone too. For me orange relates to Thursday, the letters B and O, the month November, and the numbers 6 and 9, for example.

Arran aromatics has a perfume called After the Rain

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/08/2024 23:02

Yes. The wind always picks up a few minutes before rain comes too.

WitchyBits · 01/08/2024 23:07

I can smell rain and snow. I can also smell when the people I love /am closer to are about to become ill. I can smell pregnancy on those close to me before they even get a test that's positive. Occasionally I can smell a very bad thing in strangers and I just know they are seriously ill or need to see a dr urgently. I have a very very sensitive sense of smell though. I can smell food turning even if it's in the fridge and the fridge hasn't been opened. I can also tell if it's going to snow by the colour of the light in the sky. It's a very weird vague orange/purple combo and I've never been wrong. I have had my eyes tested and I have all the colour receptors you can possibly have in your eyes. In constrast my DH sees 6 Colours and that's it 😂🤷🏼‍♀️.

Hotgirlwinter · 01/08/2024 23:09

Yes definitely. It’s such a weird but nice feeling.

CatamaranViper · 01/08/2024 23:10

I wish!! What a skill! Would save me getting soaked whenever I go out for lunch.

I can smell illness though in DS. The day before he feels poorly which is also handy as I can make sure my work tasks would fit around childcare or provisionally get DH to. Can also grab an emergency Calpol on the way home too.
