Any podcast recommendations?

Hi
Not sure if I'm posting in the right place but I'm looking for some podcast recommendations. I like podcasts with some mystery, twists and turns and I'd also like some more light hearted ones.
I've recently listened to:
Sweet bobby
Believe in magic
Carrie jade does not exist
The happiness lab
The lady vanishes (interesting but I'm finding it too long)
The trial (some episodes)
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your own backyard - the best one there is

In the Dark - season 2 in particular

Over my dead body

Bonevalley

Hunting warhead - difficult subject but fascinating

I don't really do light hearted ones 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rainbells · 31/07/2024 22:24

The Teacher's Pet

Serial, season 1 (Hae Min Lee / Adnan Syed)

Up & Vanished, season 1 (Tara Grinstead)... this one is long but worth it

Dr Death

Dirty John

Who the Hell is Hamish

In the Dark, season 2 (Curtis Flowers) (this one is crazy, so persevere through the first bit)

So many more I can recommend!! Don't google any of them though, otherwise you'll get spoilers!

Also, re Lady Vanishes, they did a shorter series of podcasts after the finished the main lot as the recognised it's really long for new listeners

StoneTheCrone · 31/07/2024 22:30

I've listened to countless podcasts and i have to say they're all rubbish.

Mostly, theyre repetitive, boring and way too long.

I wonder who sets the format and why they make them stretch on and on and on...

It reminds me a bit of Netflix programmes- sounds exciting but the execution is stupifyingly dull.

Oh yes Who the Hell is Hamish and Dr Death are great too.

Also Exposed: cover up at Columbia was a great one too

Rainbells · 31/07/2024 22:56

Yes the Colombia one was crazy wasn't it.

Not sure why that reminded me, but "Believed" (about the Larry Nassar gymnastics scandal) was also very good/ shocking. And topical with the Olympic gymnastics being on at the moment. Simone Biles was one of the survivors of the abuse

I've not heard of that one but will check it out.

Remembered another 2:

The Retrievals

Bearbrook - season 2 especially but both seasons are good

Rainbells · 31/07/2024 23:04

Also just noticed you already recommended In the Dark season 2!

I'm listening to a new one at the moment called Hysterical which is pretty interesting so far

mummy2oneandtwo · 01/08/2024 07:46

Ha yes I did, it's an amazing one isn't it? I do think Your Own Backyard overtook it as my favourite one though!

Have you seen In the Dark has just released the first 2 episodes of Season 3? Can't wait to start listening to that.

I was recommended Hysterical last week and it's saved in my list of ones to listen to.

🤣

I listen to comedy mainly but loved Teacher’s Pet and West Cork. Also The Rest is Politics/History when they cover topics that interest me. I LOVE podcasts - they have transformed how I feel about my commute and doing the housework as I look forward to listening!

middleagedswiftie · 01/08/2024 08:03

Oh also The Price of Paradise - insane true story, so good!

Aaron95 · 01/08/2024 08:14

I have recently discovered The Lovecraft Investigations on BBC sounds. It is brilliant.

It's funny isnt it. In theory, I should love them, I WANT to love them but god, the boredom of listening to people um and ahh and mumble their way through an episode drives me batty.

I think the problem is that I just dont enjoy listening to the spoken word, I'd rather watch or read, which is impossible to do while doing other things like housework and gardening.

Obek1999 · 01/08/2024 09:24

Lighthearted - Dish with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett.

Yes if you don’t enjoy listening to the spoken word then podcasts aren’t for you! I’ve enjoyed talk radio from a young age so podcasts are a dream come true for me! I just found it funny that you dismissed ALL podcasts and ALL Netflix shows. 😅

I love reading but don’t really do audiobooks for some reason.

Yes, I gave up my Audible app through frustration. I still have about half a dozen books on there which I haven't listened to.

I do like Netflix, just not the long drawn out series which could be condensed without losing any of the meaning.

StoneTheCrone · 01/08/2024 09:46

Ive always listened to and enjoyed Radio 4 though, so its odd I dont enjoy audio books and podcasts.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/08/2024 09:47

Dark: Bad Women
Comedy: Cabin Pressure

Hibernatalie · 01/08/2024 09:54

My Therapist Ghosted Me
Telling Everybody Everything (Katherine Ryan)
Uncanny
Who Replaced Avril Lavigne?

Copperboomx · 01/08/2024 10:46

Thanks so much for all these recommendations. Some of these look interesting.
I think I'm going to start with teachers pet and see how I get on 😊

The Rabbit Hole Detectives - completely fascinating

efeslight · 01/08/2024 12:27

We recently listened to the Rosebud podcast, with Kier Starmer. Giles Brandreth interviewed him about his childhood and early memories. Normally I listen to true crime podcasts like Crime Junkie but this was a pleasant change.

Rainbells · 29/08/2024 12:01

A couple of new ones:

  • Broomgate : a curling scandal - really enjoyable, even if you have no interest in the sport of curling!
  • Noble - a scandal in a family run crematorium business in Georgia in the US. Only up to episode 6 so far, but really well presented

Really enjoyed this one and listened to some other Rosebud ones too - thanks for the recommendation!

Made me think that these questions would be good to ask grandparents, recorded for posterity
