Please help, awaiting a callback from 111…do they use No caller ID? is this a scam?

Called 111 this morning and was advised someone would call me back.

Since then I have had 3 calls from the same London number. The first time I answered and they hung up. The second time I ignored it as thought it might be dodgy. The third time I answered but said nothing , they said nothing and then someone said “hello?” before hanging up.

No Voicemail messages were left.

I looked it up online and the reviews are mixed - some saying it’s a scam, others saying NHS.

I am anxious about my health but also about giving all my details away! The NHS website says a nurse will call up to 3 times and leave a message if nobody answers. It also says you will not be able to call back.

I've had experience of both - one time they called back with no caller ID and another time there was a number. Sorry I know thats not very helpful!

Just answer, and put the phone down if it's not them?

I’m not being funny but if you’re expecting a call back from somewhere, why are you watching the phone ring thinking it may be a dodgy call? Pick the phone up and say ‘hello?’ and give the person a chance to state who they are.

You’re waiting for a call back from 111 and you’re ignoring calls because you don’t recognise the number. How does that make sense?

SeeSeeRider · 31/07/2024 15:16

Don't tell me, you rang 111 about anxiety? Around incoming phone calls?

mechanicalpencil · 31/07/2024 15:19

Please read the OP.
I did answer the first time, said hello and they hung up.
So I googled the number and it said potential scam, fraudsters posing as NHS be careful about disclosing details. Others said it was NHS.
That’s why I posted here in case anyone has experience of a callback and can tell me whether or not they use no caller ID.
The first questions they ask are to confirm my date of birth, address etc…

A lot of calls from switchboard systems come up as no caller ID

Redshoeblueshoe · 31/07/2024 15:22

Not much point in ringing them if you are going to hang up when they call you back.

TheGirlWhoLived · 31/07/2024 15:25

@mechanicalpencil when I’ve had a gp ring after nhs 111 advice it was always from a London number (020) if I remember correctly!

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 31/07/2024 15:25

Callbacks from 111 can vary hugely as to how they look on caller ID because different calls will be triaged to different routes and some call centres have a caller ID and some have it blocked.

It's really idiotic to either not answer the phone or to answer and not say anything. You may need to call 111 again to get put back onto the call list.

Seeline · 31/07/2024 15:43

My DS had a call back from 111 on a London number last week. He couldn't call it back, but had calls from a GP and someone else from 111 on the same number

GoldenPombear · 31/07/2024 15:50

It could be from a no caller number or a surgery number, I've also had London numbers. Really odd to not pick up the phone/ answer but not speak. Sounds like they've called 3 times now, you would be best to redial 111 to see if they've bumped you off the list.

leeverarch · 31/07/2024 15:50

Ring 111 again and ask them whether anyone has tried to call you yet? Say you had some funny calls that got cut off.
