If you could emigrate, where would you go?

Just curious if you could, or if you have, where would/did you go?

I feel like the UK is becoming so unsafe and I wonder if it's a 'grass is greener' but I'd love to move abroad. Just no idea where.

I love where I live in the US and if I moved anywhere it would be to Ireland. But I think living in London would be amazing (if I had a ton of money).

Gettingbysomehow · 31/07/2024 22:02

I dont want to but if I had to it would be west Ireland. I wont go anywhere spidery.
Thinking about it probay Canada as I love cold places.

AdoraBell · 31/07/2024 22:05

Chile 🇨🇱 we lived there. We would love to go back there.

Norway.

Me too. I completely fell in love with Oslo.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 31/07/2024 22:24

I have never wanted to live anywhere other than the UK but if I was told I had to move I’d choose New England. Somewhere close to Boston or on Cape Cod.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 31/07/2024 22:24

Maybe Denmark. We've just come back from a week in Aarhus and loved it. I don't feel at all unsafe in the UK though and wouldn't move away from elderly parents.

Lentilweaver · 31/07/2024 22:43

Given events, I think I will need to emigrate to a place that has just the right number of brown people. Not too many-that will enrage the locals- and not too few- that will make me stand out like a sore thumb.😐

Crushed23 · 31/07/2024 22:51

New York City.

FountainofTruth · 31/07/2024 22:55

I wouldn't emigrate but I'd choose a Scottish Island. Which one? I don't know which one I'd choose, my social media algorithm keeps leading me there. I think it's because life seems slower, more connected to the seasons and my childhood experiences.

ohthejoys21 · 31/07/2024 23:06

Vancouver for sure.

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/07/2024 23:08

Amsterdam is lovely but we’re very happy indeed to be retiring to the Scottish Highlands (where my family come from).

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 31/07/2024 23:25

We emigrated to Northern Canada 13 years ago. We don’t really get four proper seasons - spring and autumn don’t hang around for long. We get huge temperature swings - minus 30 or below in winter and plus 30 in summer.

Pieceofpurplesky · 31/07/2024 23:28

A tiny Greek Island like Mamma Mia.

Ozgirl75 · 31/07/2024 23:32

We emigrated to Australia 16 years ago - best decision we ever made.

Maddy70 · 31/07/2024 23:36

I did it when brexit was looming as my circumstances wouldnt allow it post brexit

It was all done quite impulsively. Zero regrets

weimar123 · 31/07/2024 23:44

Pretty much anywhere but Switzerland - grew up there from the age of 5 and couldn't leave fast enough when I turned 18. The locals make absolutely sure to let you know you'll never be one of them, no matter how incredibly hard you try to integrate, and like to give lots of unsolicited "advice" (that's if you're lucky, sometimes they just go behind your back and report you to the police for showering after 10pm). It's heartbreaking to grow up somewhere where you'll never be accepted. Even though I spent my formative years there, I'll never be Swiss, but I was a Londoner within a year of moving there.

I've never been happier since I've moved to the UK and have loved my 10+ years here! I feel so welcome, happy, and at home here having lived in Scotland and SW England. (Originally from another EU country).

weimar123 · 31/07/2024 23:48

Just adding that a lot of people are perfectly happy in Switzerland if they stay in their expat bubble, but it gets much harder if you try to integrate - especially if you're from an "undesirable" country like I was (I.e. not Anglo-Saxon or rich).

Cowboycorgi · 31/07/2024 23:48

I see a few have mentioned Canada. Yeah, it's nice, but
Cost of living is insane
Rents / house prices out of control
Medical services are a joke. You can't get a family Dr & and walk-in clinics are full to capacity by 8am
School system awful
Massive drugs, homeless, and untreated mental health make my city a no-go area after dark
Canadians may have a friendly reputation, but they are actually really passive-aggressive. And then there is Trudeau he really is a problem.

weimar123 · 31/07/2024 23:52

@DecusCulinae you love the low migration rates back home in Switzerland? You sound like such a lovely person. Presumably if Switzerland is "back home" you're an immigrant somewhere else - although I'm sure you thing of yourself as a very sophisticated expat

MrsBobtonTrent · 01/08/2024 00:08

Switzerland and scandì sound nice and look lovely, but are very rules-y and hard to integrate into. Canada is a mess atm.

As an immigrant to UK, I do quite like it here. Not perfect, but there are lots of positives especially if you avoid the news and live in a nice area.

I’ve lived all over and the places I felt most at home were Northern Italy (cooler weather, but all the loveliness of the rest of Italy) and Russia (great people, plenty of culture, proper weather).

Tumblingjungleofchaos · 01/08/2024 00:13

I always thought Greece or Italy, but just back from a short break in Portugal and absolutely loved it.

It's my new favourite (until my next trip somewhere, which will become the favourite!)

ilovesooty · 01/08/2024 00:18

The Netherlands probably.

dalskis · 01/08/2024 00:23

In reality I think the grass is always greener in most countries. I like the idea of Switzerland, Norway or Denmark, but in reality I'd always be an outsider and I'd struggle to pick up the language in my 40s.

I loved NYC when I visited but I think it's changed a lot, and I'm not sure it offers much more than London where I live now, and it gets much colder.

I'm not satisfied with life in London and I don't quite fit in despite having grown up here. But I'm not sure I'd find what I'm looking for in any other country either.

Appalonia · 01/08/2024 00:26

France so I could paint glorious landscapes.

Or Thailand. Fell in love with the country when I went there a few years ago. Beautiful, peaceful, spiritual.

TheReturnofthePinkPanther · 01/08/2024 01:02

Vancouverite here - I completely agree with @Cowboycorgi. Housing costs are obscene, and cities are increasingly unsafe due to the drugs crisis. I'm also fed up with the expectation that everyone in my workplace must hold and regularly express certain political beliefs. I suppose that most Anglophone countries have similar problems at the moment, though, and there is a strong sense that we will get rid of Trudeau at the next election.

I've increasingly been thinking of emigrating, as have my parents and some friends. I'd probably go to Scotland or Japan, although my parents have suggested Spain and (to my surprise, as none of us speak the language) Poland. Unfortunately, my parents are ageing and probably wouldn't go through with emigrating, as they're concerned about access to health care in a new country🙁
