If you could emigrate, where would you go?

Just curious if you could, or if you have, where would/did you go?

I feel like the UK is becoming so unsafe and I wonder if it's a 'grass is greener' but I'd love to move abroad. Just no idea where.

My friend recently visited Costa Rica and says everybody would want to emigrate there if they could. Has anyone been?

I like busy, bustling, crowded cities with lots ot do, so I don;t want a rural paradise, or at least not until I am much older.

Everyone loves it but it can be bloody hot. One benefit is that in El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua, you see a lot of army/military everywhere. In Costa Rica they don't have a standing army.

I'd rather go to the cheaper, less touristy CA countries.

Im not a sponging fucker. Thats your logic fail.

So you are a high rate taxpayer? I doubt it, frankly.

I am. I run 4 holiday cottages. Which are successful . I pay my taxes as I should.

thank you

I moved to The UK, and still believe it to be the best decision of my life. Now, buckle up - I love the weather/climate (I hate snow and long dark winters), love nature (there is nothing better in the whole world than the glorious British spring bloom!), I love the food (I genuinely love British pub comforts as well as the widespread availability of any cuisine/trend/fad/quirk under the sun). Also the institute of individual liberty, ability (and right!) to believe and act freely, and still be respected. In many countries (also European countries....) people are expected to heavily conform and all be the same, with zero respect regardless.

So you're not a high rate tax payer. So you're a net taker from the system. 'Sponger' if you will. Bonus for taking housing away from people who need them.

I thought this thread would be light hearted, but no, everything has become about moaning about immigration.

Actually, I have decided I wouldn't mind emigrating to Greece. I love the country and their heritage.

79Helene · 31/07/2024 15:08

I thought about moving to France a lot when I was younger but never got round to it because kids and life happened, but we're planning to move there eventually when everyone's a bit older and settled. Not so much because I think it's safer - far from it - but weather, food, good healthcare, easy for friends and family to visit from England (and vice versa), and especially to be able to spend time with the other side of my family.
I don't feel it's a case of grass is always greener as such, but I generally feel more at peace there.

beguilingeyes · 31/07/2024 15:08

Canada if it weren't so bloomin' cold. I could happily live in the Netherlands, I think.
In reality, not leaving London unless it's in a box.

I would move there for the food alone.

I would love to move to the USA, been a dream for absolutely years, unlikely to ever happen though. Close second would be Poland or Norway, beautiful places. I’ve had a couple of friends move to Australia over the years, nurses and teachers and they seem to enjoy life and work a lot more over there.

MagpiePi · 31/07/2024 15:12

I'd go to Australia, or somewhere warm by the sea with waves.

AlwaysWearSPF · 31/07/2024 15:12

Canada!

SecretWitch · 31/07/2024 15:15

Im in the US and would love either out west to Idaho or Western Canada. I hate the hot summers of the Midwest and love long snowy winters

DaftyLass · 31/07/2024 15:17

Well, I live on Vancouver Island, so I don't want to move anywhere, but I'd love to move out family here, it is so hard being so far away.
Sadly, Island life is pricey

Redhairandhottubs · 31/07/2024 15:17

Somewhere much cooler than here! Probably Norway or Denmark. I've never been to either but I like what I've heard about them.

blossomismyfriend · 31/07/2024 15:17

Norway.

No, its a complex of 4 lets on my farm. Because it was easier to build 4 lets, than one home for a family because that was not allowed.

Carebearsonmybed · 31/07/2024 15:26

USA
I think my DCs would do better there.

It's pretty dang amazing, if you can find housing

ToplessWordle · 31/07/2024 15:38

I'd go to New Zealand. I know it has problems too - earthquakes, domestic violence and the ram raids on dairies and shopping centres - but it has so much land, a relatively mild climate, and is far away from war and accidents elsewhere in the world.

Wahine24 · 31/07/2024 15:48

South island New Zealand , in an "empty" bit, not a touristy bit

Vancouver in a heartbeat.Mountains, beach, city, skiing in winter…absolutely stunning and Canadians so friendly.

My DS went to Vancouver for work last year and said it was really rough - maybe he just went to the wrong area!

Easipeelerie · 31/07/2024 16:00

Italy, Spain, France, Portugal.

Why do you feel the UK unsafe? What’s unsafe about it? I’ve never thought of our country in this way. I’m in Manchester, have lived in London and always felt absolutely fine.
