Cheapest cars to insure for new driver?

I’ve had a Google but struggling to find links to which cars are definitely the cheapest to insure for a young driver. I’d prefer not to go through the whole rigmarole of getting quotes for each car I’m looking at but ideally something in the lowest insurance category. Any ideas what to look for please?

Fiat 500 is supposed to be one of the cheapest. I would look at a few small cars, decide which be most suitable, and put the details in to a comparison website. I'd definitely consider the fiesta, corsa and aygo too.

I've just gone through this as I was replacing my car and wanted it to be in a lower insurance group so ds1 could learn to drive/be a named driver when he passes his test.

If you use Autotrader then it tells you the car group under "Running Costs" and you can also get info on the groups here: Car Insurance Groups Checker | MoneySuperMarket. There's also a list of the cars in group 1: Car Insurance Group 1 | MoneySuperMarket

I ended up getting a low spec Fiesta which is perfect for my needs and also in group 4 so fairly cheap to insure. Obviously the insurance group is only part of it though and whatever you get, a new young driver will be expensive.

Dsd discovered that midsized family cars were cheaper than fiesta sized or smaller, probably because they aren't trendy for youngsters
