Middle of the night prank call?

Has anyone had this? I have just had what I assume is a prank call from a private number.

I answered (mistake) and at first I could hear talking in the background. A voice then came on saying something in such a menacing tone that I immediately put the phone face down away from me and I then heard them ring off.

On the other hand if hadn’t answered, their scary “message” might have gone to my message box.

Is this a thing? How would they have got my number? It was very unpleasant and I now have several lights on wondering if anyone is outside where I live.

Prank calls used to be a thing when I was younger. But that was on landlines - I'm talking pre mobiles.
It was easy in those days to find some ones number as , unless you asked to be listed as private, your number was in the telephone directory. Much , much different from the mobile era.

Having said that: unless the call you got gave some indication they actually knew you then the call could have been just someone dialling random numbers until some one answered. Somebody just out to upset anyone. Not particularly you.

I know it's easy for me to say because it's a very unnerving experience OP but try not to worry. I very much doubt anyone will be outside. People who make calls like that get their kicks from the fear they create from the call. Besides they want to remain anonymous. And it is every chance it is not personal against you. You just happened to be the unlucky number they randomly dialled.

Was it definitely for you? Could it have been a wrong number?
Sounds pretty scary

Can you Google the number and see if there is any feedback on there about this number?
