Has anyone been to Santorini recently?

It’s a port on our upcoming cruise and after seeing recent news reports I’m seriously thinking of giving it a miss and staying on the ship, it looks like an absolute nightmare!

I’ve completely missed what’s happening but Santorini is too beautiful to be missed.

We did it as a cruise port last August and it was fine. We didn't dock till
midday so didn't have a rush to get back (sailed about 11pm). We took a ship excursion which was a tender then a coach drive to Fira and time on our own there to avoid the cable car and steps, but no guided tour. The town was busy but not unbearably so and the sunset was amazing.

Is there an option to do something like a boat excursion from the cruise or with an independent provider? The news reports seem to indicate that it's the sheer number of tourist on the island that are causing problems. Getting the perfect photo takes a lot of queueing.

That said, staying on board while the majority of the rest of the passengers get off can be fun. The pools are quieter and sometimes there are offers for on board activities like the spa.
