At what age do you think we should teach children what to do in cases of attack? I know where I work I have been given safety briefings on knife/gun/bomb attacks and have always wondered what would be a good age to teach age appropriate best chance survival skills for theese situations. Obviously without scaring them.

Cadela · 30/07/2024 14:02

Alice Aguiar I’m so sorry this happened.

Hoping her family can pull together in this time of horrific pain and grief. Unimaginable.

Oh is this Emma person why my thread yesterday got deleted?

Note that the racist comments are often from men. It's to distract you from that fact that they are almost always men. I want to protest. I want us all to scream from the rooftops that they need to deal with men. The violence against us is CONSTANT. I'm fucking sick of it.

My thread's been deleted too. I started it yesterday, just over 24 hours ago, when there was next to no news about what was happening, just that something had happened in Southport. When I saw the way it was being 'discussed' on X/Twitter, I couldn't believe it. Racist anti-Muslim posts absolutely swamping everything else. I reported some and as usual the moderators over there have found nothing wrong with those tweets, which were far worse than most of the stuff that's been deleted here. However, what's been posted here has been bad enough. I think now I was naive not to realise that this would happen. Depressing.

I wasn’t aware because my son hasn’t mentioned it but some parents have mentioned their kids (same year as mine) have spoken about a lockdown procedure in school. I’m unsure whether that’s true. They’re Y1.

Quire frankly, I don't give a damn about his 'mental illness', or whatever contrived reasons will turn up, as long as he never sees the light of day again.

That’s all very well but if understand and treating people’s ‘mental illness’ prevents such tragedies in the future then frankly it’s worth caring about.

Needanewname42 · 30/07/2024 14:07

That's absolutely heartbreaking.
I cannot imagine what those poor families are going though.

Please God 🙏 help the others who are still fighting.

After Dunblane school security was tightened up.
This makes me feel that dance studios, sports halls, church halls etc should be kept locked while kids groups are in session.

MysticalLibrarian · 30/07/2024 14:08

People will claim mental health break, psychosis, whatever…yet somehow these males don’t waltz into a boxing gym and start stabbing big strong men, do they? No, it’s always a theme, so just how far gone could they possibly be if they can make that sort of clear-headed decision?

I know there are Jewish schools in London that have drills for the children because of the amount of serious threats these schools get. These aren’t teenagers, they are little kids going through drills and lockdowns. Sort of like what you see the states.

My children aren't schoolage yet so forgive me if I am being naive. I mean more what to do in the situation that just occurred. When not in a place like at home with your parents or in a school where they have procedures foe these things. And likely adults who will protect them. I mean more at a busy park, restraunt, shopping mall, cinema etc.
But absolutely school drills for lockdowns and what to do therr is unfortunately very much needed and I'm all for that.
I just mean, would I try and impart some understanding of what to do in an emergency life threatening situation to mu 4 YO for example? Or is that just really damaging and frightening to them? But if it has the chance to save their life. I don't know, it's just got me thinking is all

Is there anyway to give to the affected families?

It's just so so awful

Hi, apparently a lot of money has already been raised for them. I did a quick google and found a Just Giving page, and posted the link in reply to you. However, mumsnet have intercepted the page (do be careful of course to check out any JustGiving set ups; it is awful to think that there could be any scams in connection with this, but I guess it might be possible).

My child has lockdown drills in school too.

I think what I (naively) didn’t realise is how open to attack places like this setting are. Schools are secure with gates, fences, intercom entry, CCTV etc but local community centres, playgroups, village halls…they don’t have that. Many of them hold play schemes and classes for children out of term time and absolutely anybody can walk in.

Without a trial you have no chance to understand and affect change. You still might not with a trial but at least it provides an opportunity for the parents to gain some insight. I don't think shooting on the spot once they're unarmed is appropriate

I didn't mean shooting on the spot.
I meant an "express check-out, re the movie

But what insight can you get other than some people are evil and don’t deserve our compassion or help.
Personally if I was one of the parents I would prefer if he had been shot dead.

I don’t get the reference but I certainly sympathise with the impulse to hurt and kill somebody to stop them inflicting further harm. Fair trials protect everyone in society though, the alternative doesn’t bear thinking about.

But where does this end? Should we not take children to the local park in groups or to the cinema etc? There are loads of places someone could predict there would be groups of children and do something like this. This is horrendously awful but incredibly rare.

I just find it incomprehensible that he could do so much damage with a knife.

I teach and run a holiday club. We are looking at our points of weakness as a result of this and unfortunately there are many. The element of surprise and then shock is probably the biggest thing but little kids can't begin to defend themselves and most of these clubs are run on a shoestring with minimum staffing levels made up overwhelmingly of women. We wouldn't have done a great job in the circumstances described and that is worrying moving forwards. And it frankly sounds like the efforts of the adults involved prevented it from being much, much worse. I do hope all those who are described as critical pull through.

TheLilacTurtle · 30/07/2024 14:28

Why is it always women/children/vulnerable people these men attack? If it’s mental illness which I’m sure is what they’ll say, why not attack anyone? Go to a gym full of men? It never is and they wouldn’t dare. Really horrified and upset, those poor children, teachers and their friends and families. Awful

Not going to be clicking on a DM link. Would encourage all to look elsewhere for factual and reliable news!

quite honestly other newspapers often don't even mention things that could be construed as facts we don't want to admit are happening. . I read the Guardian as well as the Mail online, also the readers comments which are carefully controlled before allowed to be published. The views have to comply with the 'all immigration is great mantra,' so serious discussion with all sides of the argument on the table just doesn't happen. Also most of the comments on political discussion are juvenile to say the least. Yah boo stuff! I made a comment recently reflecting what a large part of the population is thinking , and hoping for a civilised and adult discussion of various views but they refused to print it. It wasn't racist or a put down on any section of the population.

Anjo2011 · 30/07/2024 14:37

@notbelieved that’s a sobering post. You will be one of many holiday clubs that provide a wonderful service over the holidays for children to come and enjoy activities whilst also providing care for the children of working parents. My friends daughter is working a summer job at a nationally run summer camp and she said the same, it’s normally in school grounds or similar and there are so many possible entry points that it would impossible to make it 100% secure. A terrible tragedy and so unnecessary. Thinking of everyone affected by this.

It certainly doesn't indicate a state of psychosis. It's not excusable for any other type of mental illness either. Plenty of depressed or otherwise people manage to get through their days without attacking others, especially children.

BeethovenNinth · 30/07/2024 14:44

As I type this I’m sitting next to some men who are chain smoking cannabis whilst our kids play.

im completely against the decriminalisation of cannabis now it is so strong and more likely to cause psychosis.

This case has nothing to do with immigration.
