I believe she's going to make a statement today or soon, about plans for house-building.

What would you like her to take into consideration as she makes these plans and implements them?

Would you send her an e-mail to say what you think about it all?

I think family homes should be for families

I presume you have no spare space.

Thankfully people can spend their money on what they want. We can't afford to move but if we did I would have no guilt whatsoever in moving to a three bed house or bungalow. A bedroom for us, one for an office and a spare room. Hardly excessive.

You'll be pleased to know we live in a one bed maisonette with a garden. You probably think we don't need a garden just for the two of us, maybe we should offer it to a neighbour with a kid?

You're right. I have no spare space, my family fill my home. I find people who buy houses bigger than they need inherently selfish and a contributing factor to the housing crisis. We don't need more houses we need people to stop thinking they are entitled to a 3 bed home with a garden.

Build the right type of decent affordable housing starting at later life first so that older people can move out of their family sized homes thus creating a more fluid situation - not the usual rip off retirement homes designed to screw people over.

And for gods sake being a person who lives in an area where a massive amount of development has occurred do something about the infrastructure, we are ALL losing out because absolutely nothing has been done about the infrastructure. Our doctors surgery regularly posts on FB not to make an appointment unless you are ill...the junior school has had to get Portacabins because its struggling with the influx of new children. The sewage works is discharging huge amounts of raw sewage into the river - the worst in the area because they don't want to spend any money expanding capacity and on top of it all a humungous MegaPrison ( was supposed to cost £90 million but because of the unstable land it's on is now estimated to cost over £400 million) is being built right on our doorstep with such poor access (country lanes) and literally no public transport that I would be amazed that they will find anyone to work in it. I really do believe no matter who is in power that we are governed by morons who have no idea what life is really like for the people who are affected by their decisions and please the derogatory term NIMBYism so often used by people that have never been affected by mass development is just a way to shut people up - can't bear it

Santagotrippedoffbyareindeer · 30/07/2024 19:01

Thats something else they need to fix before building more homes, the over 55 complexes or rather the way they're completely unsellable for resale.

Tighten up the rules on how many affordable homes must be built by developers. I thought it was 50% but someone on here said it’s as little as 3% on some developments.

I’m not sure it is as much as 50% but from what I’ve seen locally all the facilities and affordable housing promised on any development reduces as the building progresses

I agree that households with more people need more bedrooms, but why are families more entitled to gardens than other household types?

Do you have children? Have you raised them in a property without outside space nearby?

Who are you to decide that I or people in my situationdon't need a home office and a spare room? Aren't we allowed family or friends to stay just because I don't have children?

So you are saying that those of use without children don't need a garden 🙄

How am I contributing to the housing crisis when I live in a bloody one bedroom flat? If you bothered reading I said I would have a three bedroom house if we could afford to move.

You've implied it by your reply to being asked why families are more worthy of a garden

JenniferBooth · 30/07/2024 19:13

@Santagotrippedoffbyareindeer Bet you were one of the ones who spouted "we are all in this together" during Covid. Knew it was bollocks and that we would be back to default setting soon enough. And i bet if we had another pathogen but one that affected children the child free would be expected to take the hit and we would suddenly be "everybodys Daddy"

Is it just social housing you're bothered about or do you want anyone with more bedrooms than they need (in your opinion) to downsize?

I think family homes should be for families

Oh so you're going to somehow force or require owner occupiers and private tenants to downsize too? How very totalitarian.

What needs to be put in place to forbid landlords from creating flat shares that are unlivable? Most people would happily rent a one bed or studio for themselves but are forced to live in shared accommodation due to prices - and recently I’ve come across poor quality homes with terrible piping and tiny rooms. These are working people!

HollyKnight · 30/07/2024 19:25

Just because a house has 3 bedrooms it doesn't make it a "family home". It's just a house with 3 rooms that can be used as bedrooms. They can also be used for other things like a home office, or a gym, or a hobby room, or storage, or a big wardrobe etc. Your home shouldn't stop being your home when your children move out.

You could give local authorities improved powers and more staff. They already have responsibility for taking legal action around "beds in sheds" and other issues like that, but they're stretched so thin.

Yep There is an HMO opposite my parents. A young woman who works full time in our local Greggs lives there. Unacceptable

MrJeremyFisher · 30/07/2024 19:31

I'm starting to think JD Vance is on MN. Last night it was "childless people should stop being selfish and work every xmas so parents can be with their children". And now it's "childless people should live in tiny boxes and be grateful they've a roof over their heads". Interspersed with the occasional "what are you doing on MN anyway?".

Autumn1990 · 30/07/2024 19:37

Build decent houses. Every size house should have outside storage, utility space, decent garden and indoor storage. That’s why people who can afford larger houses and don’t have kids have larger houses. Everyone needs somewhere to put the mountain bike, lawnmower, clothes horse, spare bedding and hobby storage space!
Nice gardens, which don’t flood and have soil in which plants will grow.

Uk passport holders prioritised over immigrants.

<shudder>

Glad I don't live anywhere near you.

Nat6999 · 30/07/2024 19:43

More adapted bungalows please, I live next to where a school was demolished over 20 years ago, the site is still empty, owned by the council so they wouldn't have to buy more land. There are over 20 sites like this in my city.

Do you genuinely think that single childless people should only be able to buy tiny one bed flats?

Christ alive.
