Would you do this commute?

Hello
Applied for a job
Got said job
They've told me the hours are 7am till 3pm
The only thing is I don't drive
I am going to have to get the 5.25am bus to the train station to catch the 5.50am train to arrive at 6.50
(And it's 2 min walk)
It would mean getting up at around 4.45 am every day (5 days and Saturday and Sundays are mandatory)

Would you ?

When I applied I assumed it was a 9 am d

NoTicket · 29/07/2024 21:28

Absolutely not

Bobskeleton · 29/07/2024 21:29

And the reverse journey would mean you get home when? 5 days a week?

I possibly wouldn't. But depends on how much you want or need the job.

Piscesmumma1978 · 29/07/2024 21:30

Is it a dream job? Will the commute cost a lot? Could you learn to drive and buy a car?

That’s a long commute and you will be exhausted getting up that early x

lovelyhat · 29/07/2024 21:30

Only if I desperately needed the job. That sounds pretty hellish.

mynameiscalypso · 29/07/2024 21:30

It depends how it fits in your lifestyle. I did a similar commute at a similar time but I was young, free and single. I couldn't have sustained it for long though.

thindertomyheart · 29/07/2024 21:30

@Bobskeleton I would be home around 5pm every night

MoosakaWithFries · 29/07/2024 21:30

Depends if I wanted/needed the job.

thindertomyheart · 29/07/2024 21:32

No it's not a dream job
It's working in a restaurant (open for breakfast )
It's a nice restaurant
The travel would be around £160 a month

Doggymummar · 29/07/2024 21:32

How far away is it, could you cycle or get a moped? What are your circumstances do you have a job already? Do you need the money are there loads of jobs in your field all if this is important

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 29/07/2024 21:33

Will the bus/train run that early on Sunday?

NigelHarmansNewWife · 29/07/2024 21:33

Do you have to get up 40 minutes before the bus?
What's the job?
At what point did they tell you the hours?
Any chance of hybrid working?

thindertomyheart · 29/07/2024 21:33

@Keepingittogetherstepbystep no not the bus on a Sunday
I would have to get a taxi to the train station

OP posts:
Dettolallin · 29/07/2024 21:33

Have you checked if the buses run as early as that on Sundays?

Bourneo · 29/07/2024 21:34

No chance!

itsmylife7 · 29/07/2024 21:36

No I wouldn't.

EBearhug · 29/07/2024 21:36

How much will you earn after tax? Because if you're paying £160 a month on travel - I probably pay that, but I suspect I am earning rather more than I would in a restaurant.

somewhatmiffed · 29/07/2024 21:38

I wouldn't partly due to the early start, but also the length of the commute and reliance on public transport

thindertomyheart · 29/07/2024 21:39

I think after tax and insurance and travel I will have around £1,500 left

OP posts:
Jellylovescustard · 29/07/2024 21:39

The train journey is 60 minutes which suggests how many miles away? Even before getting the bus and walking to the restaurant from the train station, you’re travelling some distance for a job which isn’t your dream and which requires you to be there at 7am. Hmm, OP.

NewtGuineaPig · 29/07/2024 21:40

I get up at 445 for 8am start so I don't think I'd mind that aspect but is your public transport very reliable on a weekend, trains near me often don't run well on weekend due to engineering works.

the2andahalfmillion · 29/07/2024 21:41

no chance. If you were earning megabucks with no home commitments maybe. Working in a restaurant, no Sunday transport, and partially relying on taxis? Absolutely not.

is it in the middle of nowhere? If so then the employer needs to meet reasonable travel costs or only recruit local people.

Seeline · 29/07/2024 21:43

Not with our trains! If you're using Southern or Thameslink, forget it. They are totally unreliable - having just 10 minutes to spare would make me anxious every day.

wippandzipp · 29/07/2024 21:43

Relying on a train that early in the morning for the early start no. First early trains are more often cancelled than later ones.

summerlovingvibes · 29/07/2024 21:44

Nope I wouldn't do that OP. Not for a job that isn't a dream job.
