Would you do this commute?

Hello
Applied for a job
Got said job
They've told me the hours are 7am till 3pm
The only thing is I don't drive
I am going to have to get the 5.25am bus to the train station to catch the 5.50am train to arrive at 6.50
(And it's 2 min walk)
It would mean getting up at around 4.45 am every day (5 days and Saturday and Sundays are mandatory)

Would you ?

No not a chance. It would be awful in winter

PuttingDownRoots · 29/07/2024 21:48

I wouldn't rely on public transport that early.

Zoraflora · 29/07/2024 21:50

Maybe short term until I could reduce commute time.

You will be exhausted.& will probably have to go sleep at about 9pm if you are up that early.

BigFatLiar · 29/07/2024 21:50

Sounds bad but it's something you'd get used to.

I did a commute and the train before 6am was surprisingly busy. There were quite a few people doing longer commutes.

sanogo · 29/07/2024 21:51

No

thindertomyheart · 29/07/2024 21:32

No it's not a dream job
It's working in a restaurant (open for breakfast )
It's a nice restaurant
The travel would be around £160 a month

Then no I wouldn't. If you're looking for restaurant work surely there'll be somewhere closer?

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 29/07/2024 21:52

Have done that type of commute before, when younger
Wouldn't do it now unless I was unable to get a job closer. Would definitely recommend considering a moped or electric bike for parts of the journey.

TonyTigerKindaSexy · 29/07/2024 21:53

Not a chance.
Trains are unreliable as fuck.
As an example: It'll have taken DP about five hours to get home tonight (Cambridge to York, a journey that should be 2.5 hours) and that's involved an Uber because otherwise he physically couldn't have got home.

That's not his usual commute. His usual is York to Sheffield which used to be a 45 minute journey with three 8-coach trains per hour. It's now a 1hr 20min journey with 4-coach trains once an hour. It's carnage.

DP earns close to £200k per year and says the commute isn't worth it. Fuck travelling by train for a non-dream restaurant job.

My commute is 45-minutes by train. Comparatively easy. But I only tolerate it because it's twice a week for 20 weeks of the year only. Otherwise I couldn't do it.

Your commute on winter mornings would be the stuff of nightmares.

MoosakaWithFries · 29/07/2024 21:55

Are there restaurants more closer to where you live that you can apply to?

JC03745 · 29/07/2024 21:55

Congrats on getting the job OP!
I did a similar commute years ago with train and bus, but I was temping. I really enjoyed the place, and they liked me, and I eventually arranged to start 1hr later as it was just too much.

Are you a morning person? What time do you get up for your current job? Could you take the job and keep looking for something closer, especially for the winter?

No33 · 29/07/2024 21:56

No, I travel 2 hours but that includes school drop off in the opposite direction.

We leave at 7 and that is bad enough

livingonhomemadesoup · 29/07/2024 21:57

No (sorry) there's a lot to be said for work life balance

PerkyMintDeer · 29/07/2024 21:57

Hell no, nothing would be worth it. It's going to be utterly miserable in the depths of winter especially.

PurpleReindeer2 · 29/07/2024 21:57

No way I would do it.

thindertomyheart · 29/07/2024 21:59

It's a lot of travel for a minimum wage job isn't it really

OP posts:
cadburyegg · 29/07/2024 21:59

No that sounds grim. Sorry

Lovemycat2023 · 29/07/2024 22:00

No, that sounds like it would be very stressful esp as PPs say relying on trains at the weekend. Trains on a Sunday morning here are very hit and miss - they start later, get cancelled, or bus replacement.

Yep and I think the fact you started a thread about it shows you were already thinking it too.

whereisthelifethatirecognize · 29/07/2024 22:05

For a minimum wage job? Absolutely not.

Purplecatshopaholic · 29/07/2024 22:06

If I wanted it I’d learn to drive. Otherwise, no way.

Genuine question...why are you considering this?

Are there no other jobs nearer home that would be a better fit?

It doesn't sound like a once in a lifetime opportunity or worth the stress you'll have.

JC03745 · 29/07/2024 22:07

Nope, not for a minimum wage job!

Did you have no clue what hours the restaurant opened when you applied???

xyz111 · 29/07/2024 22:08

Not for a low paid job that you could probably do closer to home.

Loloj · 29/07/2024 22:09

I definitely wouldn’t

ChubSeedsYorkie · 29/07/2024 22:14

Depends how much of a morning person you are. I used to get up 5 to go to the gym before work and it didn’t bother me but I liked the mornings then… not a morning person now 😂

Id worry about relying on public transport though. Although depends where you live? Around near me it’s awful so wouldn’t rely on it.
