Would you do this commute?

Hello
Applied for a job
Got said job
They've told me the hours are 7am till 3pm
The only thing is I don't drive
I am going to have to get the 5.25am bus to the train station to catch the 5.50am train to arrive at 6.50
(And it's 2 min walk)
It would mean getting up at around 4.45 am every day (5 days and Saturday and Sundays are mandatory)

Would you ?

Surely you checked what the commute would be before applying for the job?

FayeGreener · 29/07/2024 22:18

For the last ten years I’ve done a job where I wake up at 4:30 AM and commute to start work at 7:00. Finish at 3:30 and generally home by 5:00.

You do get used to it, though I am often knackered.

You do have to go to bed by 9 PM which kinda limits your social life.

One nice thing is being up and about when few other people are, and getting home before the rush hour kicks in.

DanceMumTaxi · 29/07/2024 22:19

No, absolutely not.

TwoBlueFish · 29/07/2024 22:22

For a minimum wage job, no I wouldn’t do it. Are there other job opportunities closer?

bonzaitree · 29/07/2024 22:22

I might take it if I was desperate for money.

Getting up early is better than being evicted or going without necessities.

Surprising that more people haven’t thought of this…

SaltyChocolate · 29/07/2024 22:24

I used to get the train for an hour to an airport for a 6 or 7am start waitressing - I was 24 at the time. Trains always ran as it was an airport.

Would fall asleep on train home. The money was good so that was why. I was clearing about £1,500 a month after tax and travel, but this was 20 years ago.

RabbitsRock · 29/07/2024 22:26

Will you be working 7 days a week OP? Or 5 days including Sat & Sun? Sorry if I’m being dim! I wouldn’t take the job anyway.

TheShiningCarpet · 29/07/2024 22:27

I am a big believer that sometimes you have to just pull up your socks and do what you need to do to get on especially in a tight spot. I also don’t drive.

but…. Not for minimum wage and relying on two forms of public transport … what if the bus is late and you miss your train? Train is late?

i am confident you can find something better

catin8oots · 29/07/2024 22:28

No way. When I worked in pubs and restaurants they would have to be within 15 minutes of my house

Crysti · 29/07/2024 22:29

No way would I do this to have £1500 home a month!! Bound to something in a restaurant closer to you?

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 29/07/2024 22:31

Hell no. Find something closer to home. No way would I be doing a 3.5 hour round trip to work for a job in hospitality - for £1.5K a month. Long commutes belong with high-end, very well paid jobs!

JoanThursday · 29/07/2024 22:31

I used to commute across the north of England and did it for nearly 10 years - 30 min walk to the station and an hour's train journey. Three hours a day, sometimes travelling back late at night.

I don't know how I did it - absolutely exhausting. And you only need a bout of bad weather or engineering works for everything to be thrown out of whack. I wouldn't do it if I was working shifts on a min wage job. Actually, I wouldn't do it ever again!

No, because in the winter in would be horrible

chubbyvegan · 29/07/2024 22:33

No way.

chocciechipz · 29/07/2024 22:38

I did it for 3 Years, almost identical Hours. 100% would have carried on doing it for years if I didn't have Children! I'm an early bird and loved having so much day left once I had finished. Congratulations on the Job!

Sladuf · 29/07/2024 22:43

somewhatmiffed · 29/07/2024 21:38

I wouldn't partly due to the early start, but also the length of the commute and reliance on public transport

The reliance on public transport being a huge factor for me here. I had a colleague who had to do a similar commute and the bus sometimes didn’t show.
During the winter months especially this sort of commute would be prone to problems e.g. the “leaf fall problems” the train companies regularly come out with. Bad enough in the days when I caught trains and one leaving at 7:30 didn’t show up let alone 5.50am and you’ve also had to get a bus to the train station.

I’d say no, OP!

RawBloomers · 29/07/2024 22:53

The early start wouldn’t really bother me, commutes are normally a lot nicer out of peak periods and I like mornings.

The length of the commute and the reliance on two forms of public transport would be a concern. Probably worth it if the job was particularly good or a good stepping stone or I was out of work and hadn’t had much luck elsewhere or something. But doesn’t sound like that’s the case for you.

Nocturna · 29/07/2024 23:01

Hell would have to freeze over first

TubeScreamer · 30/07/2024 07:54

Not a chance. Those early starts and the long commute would be exhausting and depressing.

Beezknees · 30/07/2024 07:57

No. It's not the commute that would bother me, I'm a non driver myself but it would be the hours. I wouldn't be comfortable waiting at the train station as a lone female at that time of morning, it would be pitch dark in winter.

socks1107 · 30/07/2024 07:59

I do a three hour round commute on public transport.
I really wanted the opportunity this job brought me and it's paid off. I love it and am very happy. So yes if it's a good opportunity I'd do the commute

sunsetsandboardwalks · 30/07/2024 08:02

God, absolutely not.

There's no way I would sign up to a job with a long commute ever again - 15 minutes is my max.

Luckily I work for myself now and 99% of my clients are within a five minute drive of my house.

GrumpyMiddleAgedCow · 30/07/2024 08:02

I wouldn’t but depends how badly you need a job? However, I would also never have assumed a restaurant job was 9-5 unless your pretty high up I would say that’s probably like looking for hens teeth

Stressybetty · 30/07/2024 08:05

Nope, too early and you'll just end up exhausted.

thindertomyheart · 30/07/2024 08:53

I have a job at the minute and money coming in but am actively looking for something else that has more hours
