Winter fuel payments for pensioners scrapped

Unless they are in receipt of pension credit or other benefits.

I suspect this will be the first of many benefits which will be restricted as part of cost-cutting measures.

What else might we see / should we see?

Pensioners don't need as much money as other people?!
I still have to pay for food, council tax, heating, water rates, glasses, dental work ., maintenance on my house etc.
I despair.

Waitformetoarrive · 29/07/2024 17:55

I agree with it, my parents and MIL don’t need it but got it regardless.

the same with free school meals, it should be means tested as a lot parents can afford to pay for their own kids. I would rather the funding remained and to provide a decent breakfast as well for those who parents are struggling.

LIZS · 29/07/2024 17:55

@Aligirlbear I meant as a qualifying benefit to continue to receive wf payments. Since it is not means tested and one can receive it but not pension credit.

Disgusting that the majority of people here think it's fair. We have £900 per month and pay £250 council tax. Each week we live we dig into savings which are less than the eligibility for pension credit. Not allowed pension credit because of mixed age couple. I'm not a spring chicken. I'm nearly 62 looking for employment. I could cry.

This is the same for all couples and benefits. How long haven't you been working for? Have you checked to see if you can get UC?

Fucking Tories! Robbing the elderly of basic living provision. Next they’ll be cancelling infrastructure projects that the markets would be more than happy to see as investments. And putting money in their political friends’ pockets.

Oh, sorry, I feel asleep for a month.

Beehiveme · 29/07/2024 17:56

Many really don't need this so it's a reasonable cut.

healthadvice123 · 29/07/2024 17:56

Yupthatsit · 29/07/2024 17:27

Yes but most will have worked so they will have an employment pension and possibly savings.

work pensions were not always common, my parents self employed they have a private pension of about £100. Basic state pension, well my mum less than basic, not all have savings as well. Plus what this is encouraging me to do is cancel my work pension that i struggle to pay and sod it, as i will get punished for it later as well, why struggle to pay something now ans be penalised again. They could of means tested it at a higher amount, say £30000 annual income not less than £20000,

Astrabees · 29/07/2024 17:57

Quite right! We will be sad not to get our Christmas Booze allowance this year but could never understand why we got it in the first place.

Thepartnersdesk · 29/07/2024 17:57

@MidnightPatrol where do you get £1600 a month from?

The state pension is £221 a week. Or are you assuming no pensioners are single?

What a terrible thing to say, this won’t affect the rich pensioners. This will affect pensioners who are already in poverty, who are just above the pension credit threshold. Most will have worked hard all their lives and never received benefits. The £200 per year is an absolute lifeline for many so they can keep warm over winter.

Going by this thread, I don't think people's feelings would be any different if the Tories had done this. The glee at boomers getting their comeuppance seems politically universal in here.

duc748 · 29/07/2024 17:59

I generally think there's much to be said for universal, rather than means-tested, benefits in a lot of ways. But in this particular instance, I think it's fair enough, and I am one of those pensioners who benefits from it.

MissMoneyFairy · 29/07/2024 17:59

This may be the start of means testing all benefits and a complete overhaul of the welfare system, the tories were scared of losing the grey vote.

TheAlchemy · 29/07/2024 17:59

Good. The triple lock can go next with a bit of luck.

BlackShuck3 · 29/07/2024 17:59

It was bound to happen tbh.

Namename12345562 · 29/07/2024 17:59

I do Hope something will be done about these energy companies that report record profits during an energy crisis, it seems it’s always the people in the middle footing the bill 🤷🏻‍♀️ much easier to do something that provides cuts to those in the middle instead of dealing with those creating crazy energy prices!

MrsSunshine2b · 29/07/2024 17:51

Everyone knows you need to save for retirement and have a good pension pot. Now employers auto-enrol you, there's not really much of an excuse to be relying on the basic state pension. Pensioners don't need as much money as younger people though. They've hopefully paid off their mortgage, their children are financially independent, they don't need to put money aside for their old age because they're already in it.

We’re not talking about people that were subject to auto enrolment. Many pensioners
retired before auto enrolment was even a thing. Many, particularly women, worked part time and didn’t get a pension even though their full time colleagues did.

nokidshere · 29/07/2024 18:00

@Thepartnersdesk my dh gets state pension after working full time since he was 16 so for 54yrs. The full sum he gets is £183.40 a week.

So true!
