Winter fuel payments for pensioners scrapped

Unless they are in receipt of pension credit or other benefits.

I suspect this will be the first of many benefits which will be restricted as part of cost-cutting measures.

What else might we see / should we see?

It’s been taken off all
pensioners who don’t qualify for pension credit. A pensioner with a total income of £10,500 per year won’t get it.

I get that. I'm not stupid. That's not all pensioners.

Caththegreat · 29/07/2024 17:49

Don't expect the nasty little ageists on mumsnet to be anything other than gleeful. But how they moan about the two kid cap.You all hate older people and it's unfair. This will hurt single older people esp women more.

There are some of us who aren't eligible for pension credit - we live on less than £1,600 a month with just our combined state pensions - and will miss the winter fuel allowance. We don't all jet off somewhere hot.

Nothing towards your rent?

healthadvice123 · 29/07/2024 17:50

@Yupthatsit but its being taken on many ? Unless in receipt of pension credit. My uncle used to get pension credit he was better off than my parents who get basic state pensions and not entitled to any help, state pension is what £10000 ish x 2 £20000 for a couple ans you think that's a lot to live on

Doggymummar · 29/07/2024 17:50

My parents were claiming this while at the house in Spain all Winter made me hopping mad! Good move labour party

Sirzy · 29/07/2024 17:51

I think it’s fair that it’s being capped, but I think alongside that the eligibility for pension credits needs increasing because currently the cut off is very low. At the same time we also need to ensure those entitled to it know they are and are encouraged to apply.

Noescapefromtheidiots · 29/07/2024 17:51

AvrielFinch · 29/07/2024 17:40

@Noescapefromtheidiots my parents rented. They could not sell up and downsize. We could sell up and downsize to a bedsit I suppose?

This is the sort of thing people will end up having to do.

People have to take responsibility for their own lives. Some are rich, some are poor, it's not their fault most of the time it's luck/fate/inherited wealth etc. But it is what it is. There's no point people moaning about it.

People need to house themselves in a way they can afford. I don't know why some people (posting here or not posting here) have got it into their heads that they can tie up all their income/savings in property and the government should fund their rest of their life expenses. We have an aging population so it's unsustainable to do that. In most areas of benefits people are funded enough to survive. A couple can survive in a bedsit, that's the bottom line.

There's people looking for work or too ill to work but not necessarily forever and they're not necessarily disabled, those people are also on quite basic benefits and they don't get WFA. Those people also have to live in whatever homes they can afford instead of what they'd like.

The smaller the property the easier it is to heat and the lower the council tax, generally. That sort of thing all helps with living costs too.

I never said it was a lot.

Dibblydoodahdah · 29/07/2024 17:30

No, that’s £10,500 WITH employment pension and any other earnings. The old state pension for those that retired before April 2016 is £169 per week. You really don’t understand this do you.

Everyone knows you need to save for retirement and have a good pension pot. Now employers auto-enrol you, there's not really much of an excuse to be relying on the basic state pension. Pensioners don't need as much money as younger people though. They've hopefully paid off their mortgage, their children are financially independent, they don't need to put money aside for their old age because they're already in it.

Indianajet · 29/07/2024 17:51

The way so many posters speak of older people disgusts me. I am certainly not well off - and as for downsizing, that won't work for me.
Yes, I live in a 3 bed semi - but 2 bedroom bungalows cost more than my house! There are no flats to buy, and the waiting list for a flat in assisted living is 2 years.
I cannot believe the nasty, insensitive comments on here.

Exactly,

.Parents with kids in independent school
.Elderly WFP

They couldn’t care less. Wait until it hits them and then let’s see what they say

Yep not only couldn’t care less but revel in it

LittleLlama · 29/07/2024 17:52

In the UK, a retired person’s average income was £23,557. (Office for National Statistics, 2020). But there are a lot of pensioners who only get the minimum and are not entitled to pension credits who will be badly affected.

In principle I agree with making winter fuel allowance means tested but believe the cap for doing so should be higher.

Dibblydoodahdah · 29/07/2024 17:52

Yupthatsit · 29/07/2024 17:49

I get that. I'm not stupid. That's not all pensioners.

And you think that’s fair? I was clearly talking about all pensioners above the pension credit amount. The pension credit amount is too low to use as a means test for the winter fuel amount.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 29/07/2024 17:52

Oh no, i was looking forward to receiving that in the future. Primarily to buy logs for the devil's furnace (wood burning stove).

I'm pobably going to have to start stock piling old car tyres now as a cheaper alternative.

Grannychick · 29/07/2024 17:52

OH and I saved for and did without our retirement. Now people who squandered their money are being rewarded while people like us are penalised.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/07/2024 17:41

Good points well made. I will just observe that in London the Oyster 60+ card is available from one's 60th birthday and gives free travel on all public transport in Greater London after the rush hour on weekdays and all day long on other days. I'm amazed it's lasted this long.

Edited to add I forgot we do pay an annual £10 fee, but if you use public transport a lot you can get that back in a week.

Edited

Yes, I have an older cousin who lives in London and he says it saves him a fortune. I think it's a good thing. In Tyne and Wear it is pension age but only allows you to use it on buses and the train between Newcastle and Sunderland.
If you pay £12 you can buy a card that includes the Metro.

Aligirlbear · 29/07/2024 17:52

LIZS · 29/07/2024 16:37

So presumably not Attendance Allowance?

Attendance allowance isn’t means tested

Windymoore · 29/07/2024 17:53

This isn't the issue; the scrapping of the care cap will be the thing that REALLY screws people over.

Judellie · 29/07/2024 17:53

Well, this one did need to be looked at. An aunt of mine got some benefit like this despite emigratig to Australia in the 1960s!

nokidshere · 29/07/2024 17:53

Well you could say the same about people having children they can't afford

mrandmrsrobinson · 29/07/2024 17:53

Of course they have. Austerity in a thousand cuts. Meanwhile the big boys still roam free.

You are disgusting. There are lots of pensioners living off £900 per month. So no, most don’t have too much money. Some are wealthy, many are not.
