Winter fuel payments for pensioners scrapped

MidnightPatrol · 29/07/2024 16:05

Unless they are in receipt of pension credit or other benefits.

I suspect this will be the first of many benefits which will be restricted as part of cost-cutting measures.

What else might we see / should we see?

The reason why the winter fuel allowance went to everyone of pension age is because it costs a lot less to administer than a means tested benefit. The same is true of universal child benefit. Be careful what you wish for.

@healthadvice123 , me too. There’s clearly debate to be had about inter generational fairness that doesn’t need to be so vile.

This is the sort of thing people will end up having to do.

People have to take responsibility for their own lives. Some are rich, some are poor, it's not their fault most of the time it's luck/fate/inherited wealth etc. But it is what it is. There's no point people moaning about it.

People need to house themselves in a way they can afford. I don't know why some people (posting here or not posting here) have got it into their heads that they can tie up all their income/savings in property and the government should fund their rest of their life expenses. We have an aging population so it's unsustainable to do that. In most areas of benefits people are funded enough to survive. A couple can survive in a bedsit, that's the bottom line.

There's people looking for work or too ill to work but not necessarily forever and they're not necessarily disabled, those people are also on quite basic benefits and they don't get WFA. Those people also have to live in whatever homes they can afford instead of what they'd like.

The smaller the property the easier it is to heat and the lower the council tax, generally. That sort of thing all helps with living costs too.

Yes peolle.should tske responsibility of their own loved and choices so let's also scrap child benefit, free school meals too after all if.you choose to habe a child.you should make sure you can afford one, two three and so on.

There are some of us who aren't eligible for pension credit - we live on less than £1,600 a month with just our combined state pensions - and will miss the winter fuel allowance. We don't all jet off somewhere hot.

We're not eligible for pension credit as DH gets just over the limit for one person but as I'm not of pensionable age so he can't claim for me. I can't get UC because I'm married and his income is taken into account. This year I have my works pension so are a bit better off.

samedifferent · 29/07/2024 16:21

My MIL and her DB definitely didn't need them, she was usually on cruise when the cold weather hit. But there will probably be older people not claiming what they are entitled to who will be hit.

Awful. I was looking forward to getting mine as scrimping on heating. Thats that then.

JessieLongleg · 29/07/2024 18:07

My dad is on a decent private pension and in his new retirement flat the heating is only £30 a month. He doesn't need the money.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/07/2024 17:38

Not only that, but lots of very old people can't drive any more for health reasons, so that's another reason to keep that. It is currently extremely generous, though, and I would totally understand if the age at which you can claim it went up a bit.

Yes I think 60 is very generous. Same as the NHS prescription charge

healthadvice123 · 29/07/2024 18:08

@feellikeanalien yet they claim to be a nice person, clearly a troll or bored kid in the holiday, as surely no grown adult says the things they have said. So easy when sat behind a acreeb.

LlamaNoDrama · 29/07/2024 18:08

I think they needed more of a midline with this. There are pensioners on low income not getting pension credit who will struggle but absolutely there were many who didn't need it and it's right they will no longer get it.

Rummly · 29/07/2024 18:08

The most Tory thread ever! Good on you, Labour posters.

PerfectYear321 · 29/07/2024 18:09

AvrielFinch · 29/07/2024 17:39

Londoners and people in Scotland and Wales get free buses from 60. The rest of us don't though. I am early sixties and don't get anything.

Oh, wow, I didn't know that!

That’s nice for your dad but what about those who do need it?

eggplant16 · 29/07/2024 18:09

Indianajet · 29/07/2024 17:54

Pensioners don't need as much money as other people?!
I still have to pay for food, council tax, heating, water rates, glasses, dental work ., maintenance on my house etc.
I despair.

I pay astronomical dental bills , physio bills, therapy bills. I didn't ask for poor health.

Vikina · 29/07/2024 18:11

I cannot believe the unkindness and ageism on this thread.

Totally agree, the pension credit threshold needs increasing

the80sweregreat · 29/07/2024 18:11

Lots of people have free travel past 60 and free prescriptions too
I would have thought she may have targeted this too ( or the Christmas bonus)

namechanging21 · 29/07/2024 18:11

Grannychick · 29/07/2024 17:52

OH and I saved for and did without our retirement. Now people who squandered their money are being rewarded while people like us are penalised.

Exactly. Makes you wonder what the point of going without and saving was, to end up worse off than some on benefits. May as well go through life not worrying and let the state fund it all.

eggplant16 · 29/07/2024 18:11

Thepartnersdesk · 29/07/2024 17:57

@MidnightPatrol where do you get £1600 a month from?

The state pension is £221 a week. Or are you assuming no pensioners are single?

Its not 221 a month.

Absolutely - if people should live on property they can afford.limit housing benefit to a one bedroom flat. If people can’t afford more they shouldn’t have kids.

LaDoIceVita · 29/07/2024 16:23

Pension Credit or 'other means tested benefits'. No idea which means tested benefits can be claimed by pensioners.

Housing benefit, council tax support.

blackcherryconserve · 29/07/2024 18:13

Yupthatsit · 29/07/2024 17:44

But it's not being taken off all pensioners.

The only pensioners who will receive the winter payment now are those receiving pension credit, i.e. the very poorest pensioners. Doesn't include disabled pensioners for example. Most of us will no longer receive it and many will suffer hardship as a result. Hope that helps.
