BBQ is very smoky. Is this normal?

My neighbour's seem to be coughing. The man coughs regularly when he's having his first joint of the day anyway so not too concerned. Is there anyway I can tame the smoke? I don't have a lid.

Have you tried cleaning it?

I stopped buying cheap charcoal. I found it smoked a lot, and burnt out very quickly.

Now I only use Webber briquettes, which are expensive but then so is the meat I cook on it.
