John Lewis voucher - help me spend it please?!

DH and I got married earlier this year, we have been together a long time, have children and have owned our house for a while, both work decent jobs so can afford a decent quality of life/ don’t have to think too much about little purchases here and there.
We were gifted a £250 John Lewis voucher by DH’s boss as a wedding gift but we have no clue what to spend it on, we don’t usually shop in John Lewis so it’s thrown us a bit. We don’t need anything in particular but also we don’t want to waste it.
So turning to Mumsnet, if you had £250 to spend in John Lewis, didn’t need anything specific, what would you spend it on?

Either Egyptian cotton bedding or Le Creuset casserole dishes or save it until the Christmas stuff comes into stock and buy tree decorations.

We finally bought a wooden salad bowl from John Lewis recently. I think we spent £35 but it would have been easy to spend a lot more.

Some great chairs there too.

NursieBirder · 28/07/2024 21:15

A mirror, painting/print or ornament.

Georgethecat1 · 28/07/2024 21:15

Think of things you would never spurge on but have the chance. Towels / bedding / pots / pans come to my mind. I can never justify buying expensive variants. Electrical goods maybe ipads / decent head phones?

GiantHornets · 28/07/2024 21:16

When does the voucher expire? I think it’ll be 2 years - if so, just keep it until you know what you want.
You could go to the shop & have a look. Or it’ll be valid in Waitrose too if you have one nearby

Any kitchen tech you're after? Air fryer?
Their lighting selection is very good... Great way to refresh/update a room if you've been in your place a while.

H34th · 28/07/2024 21:30

Keep it for until you need to buy something biggish next.
The guarantee is great so we prefer JL for tech. Just bought our new phones from there (they had a sale too).
Our tv, laptops, ice cream maker and baby car seat are other things we bought from there.

I'd walk round the house looking at everything you use every day and concentrate on the things that are a bit annoying/shit.

In my case that would be the bath towels which we received as wedding presents Which makes them 25 years old..and they're starting to look it.

And the kettle whose limescale filter is cracked.

And the dirty gardening gear which lives by the back door on a random piece of newspaper rather than in a neat little trug.

You will have different issues but I bet you have them.

Sprig1 · 28/07/2024 21:41

I would use it to buy really lovely food that I would not usually buy.

Babychewtoy · 28/07/2024 21:42

Can you use it for Waitrose / Ocado?

Mummypete · 28/07/2024 21:42

Oohh following as we also have one to spend. If it were up to me we’d have a couple of lovely weekly shops from Waitrose but DH wants to be able to tell the giver what we spent it on.
We’ve so far considered a pizza oven, artwork or an air fryer but none of those are exciting me very much.

HeadacheEarthquake · 28/07/2024 21:43

We got john Lewis vouchers too, and we actually ended up spending them on virgin experience days, something to do together and have a little adventure

We went kayaking and for a nice meal

See what's there!

ghostbusters · 28/07/2024 21:44

I'd buy bedding, pillows or towels. A few of our duvet sets are getting a bit threadbare and I'd like to replace them with decent equivalents, not George at Asda polycotton 😭

Or save it until autumn /winter and buy yourselves new winter coats.

ShutTheFuckUpCakes · 28/07/2024 21:45

Just spend it in Waitrose!!

Singleandproud · 28/07/2024 21:45

If you don't find something to spend it on, take it in and scanned to check the balance and that seems to restart the 2 year expiration.

Tickletuesday · 28/07/2024 21:48

I love John Lewis - maybe save it for some really lovely Christmas tree or decorations which will last you years.

BringMeTea · 28/07/2024 22:43

French linen bed linen.

Franticbutterfly · 28/07/2024 22:53

Second the Le Creuset. It's been more faithful to me over the last 10 years of marriage than DH has. 🤨

Nicebloomers · 28/07/2024 22:54

i bought a couple of neverstick2 baking trays from John Lewis and quite honestly they are amazing. I’ve already earmarked a pizza tray for my Christmas list.
A lecreuset casserole dish is a good idea.
A coffee machine

urbanbuddha · 28/07/2024 22:57

Towels and bedding, and at least one good kitchen knife. Some special Christmas decorations is a good idea too.

LibertyDuck · 28/07/2024 23:09

Might as well buy something fun!

Bjorkdidit · 29/07/2024 04:18

I'd spend it on groceries in Waitrose and then spend the £250 on a weekend away or spa day or similar.

BobnLen · 29/07/2024 05:53

I would spend it in Waitrose unless there was something I particularly wanted or otherwise you are just buying for the sake of it. Make a note of the expiry date as well

lapochette · 29/07/2024 08:42

I bought a KitchenAid mixer with a JL voucher we got but had also thought about putting it towards a coffee machine, lpad, le creuset, nice dishes, cutlery, etc.

FinallyHere · 29/07/2024 12:29

I'd use it in Waitrose for a special 'Friday' date night together until it ran out.

Then keep up the newly established tradition of setting time aside to 'date' each other.

Enjoy.
