Wwyd. Potential infected finger day before holiday

Don't judge. I went to get my nails done at a local (Thai) nail place yesterday. My usual place was fully booked so I took a chance. She slipped while filing my old gels off and took a chunk out of my finger/cuticle. Without asking she chucked some powder over it to stop the bleeding, then carried on and did my nails. When I got home I soaked it in some warm water to clean it, and have left it alone. I've now got a yellow-ish scab and a bit of swelling around the area. Nothing major but I'm concerned about an infection as we leave for holiday at 5am tomorrow. What can I use (that I can buy at the airport tomorrow) to prevent any infection taking hold?

Photo of said finger. Not impressed with the varnish job either but she was trying to avoid the wound!

TCP?

Sounds painful, but I like the old school advice 🤣

I’d leave it and treat it if necessary while on holiday.

Just bung some sudocrem and a plaster in then plenty of sea water on it during your holiday.
Have fun!

My husband has sorted a few potential infections with TCP; painful but it’s worked. I’d go to a pharmacy as soon as you arrive too though

SauviGone · 28/07/2024 20:42

TCP or Savlon.

I don’t know if it’s still even sold but Dettol antiseptic cream is an alternative.

MissingKitty · 28/07/2024 20:43

Maybe savlon? After your description of a chunk out and yellow scab I expected much worse! Hopefully itl be fine 🤞

Inmy40 · 28/07/2024 20:43

Tea tree oil. Dab it neat every few hours. Use it all the time and it is amazing on any kind of infection. Not sure who would sell it at an airport though.

Starlight7080 · 28/07/2024 20:43

We have a 24 hour chemist at our local hospital. Do you? You could ask the pharmacist if they have any suggestions.

Old school?
My DD regularly gets infected toes/fingers by cutting nails too short / picking at hang nails etc. Bathing in diluted tcp or putting tcp soaked kitchen paper on clears it up well.

But if it is old school I will read this thread to see more modern approaches! Grin

Sea salt in hot water and soak as often as possible. Then sea water if you’re on a beach holiday.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/07/2024 20:52

Nelsons tea tree cream - will be in Boots or Superdrug at the airport. Better than Savlon, TCP etc IME.

I think if you’re proactive in keeping it clean, as you have been, you should be fine. Are you going somewhere particularly isolated? Do you have your travel insurace and GHIC in place?
