What would be "a police led indicent" that would fully close a motorway

My son has travelled to Warrington this morning to pick up his son for a visit. They joined the M6 southbound, and hit serious traffic.

I looked on the traffic news and it said the M6 was fully closed in both directions due to a "police led incident". If it was a bad accident, they'd usually say that, so I don't think it will be for that.

They travelled 30 miles in two hours, but finally got moving and diverted via goodness knows where, but at least they're safe, which may not be the case for another family.

Could be a concern for welfare. Person on a bridge.

Comicalanatomical · 28/07/2024 16:54

It’s usually a jumper.

Spirallingdownwards · 28/07/2024 16:54

Either someone wandering in the lanes or as a previous person stated a potential jumper or dickheads throwing rocks from a bridge

Singleandproud · 28/07/2024 17:00

Car going the wrong way on the carriageway

Greentreesandbushes · 28/07/2024 17:01

Thelwell viaduct?

WonderingWanda · 28/07/2024 17:04

Could be all the things suggested or maybe a vehicle on fire.

FionnulaTheCooler · 28/07/2024 17:06

Last time we got caught up in traffic like that it was because someone had tried to cross the motorway on foot and got run over.

HurdyGurdy19 · 28/07/2024 17:11

Ah yes, of course, those are all possibilities. We had similar near here on two occasions in a week, with someone on a motorway bridge. That wasn't described as police led, so I didn't connect that with what was being reported today.

It says the motorway is now fully open, so hopefully whatever the situation was, it has been resolved with a good outcome.

It was an individual on a bridge. Hopefully they get the help they need

caringcarer · 28/07/2024 17:25

I've waited hours on M5 before because a potential suicide jumper refused to come down.

bittertwisted · 28/07/2024 17:46

Usually a suicide

Yep

Lemonade2011 · 28/07/2024 17:49

Recently near me it was a driver being chased by police and crashed the road was closed for 12 hours then the inside lane for a day or so whilst investigations. Also had a teen jump off bridge by my house years ago, not nice at all for all involved

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/07/2024 17:52

Jumper on the bridge. The M5 has been closed a lot recently because the same individual isn’t getting the help they clearly need.

DoLovePersimmon · 28/07/2024 19:04

We did see a man sitting on the bridge outside the railings.

This thread came up on google because both the A1 and the M1 were closed last night as is the A63 atm.

I was stuck on the A1 last night hence the search. Hope the families are being supported.
