I am absolutely fucking sick of being on a 'diet'.

My husband is 150lbs soaking wet and eats whatever he wants, when ever he wants and never gains. He's never even been a slightly bit tubby.

I've been on a mission to lose a few stone and worked really fucking hard.

In the last week I've not felt well, kids been off so I've been lax. Absolutely nothing crazy or glutinous at all. Normal routine but...
A piece of cake one day. Couple of slices of pizza for tea. Just normal things.

I've gained 7lbs. 7 fucking lbs from just going back to eating 'normally' without stringent calorie counting at 1200

I'm so sick of it. I just want to live a normal life and not gain weight.

I've always been this way. I gain so easily.

Do you excercise? It doesn't matter what I eat because I walk several miles a day I burn off what I eat. You might find incorporating excercise as well as calorie counting is more effective.

Lurkingandlearning · 28/07/2024 10:46

That must have been gutting. It’s way too hot for me to walk / exercise at the moment so I’m staying away from the scales. But I can almost feel the weight going back on. So I get your frustration 😡

Weightloss is 80% calorie control but I don't drive so I walk absolutely everywhere and have dogs that need long walks each day.

It's just a constant battle.

Lifelong.

And it makes me resentful of DH who's not experienced it, ever.

Yes, it is pants. I am post menopause and cannot eat much or I gain weight far too easily. I have to be quite strict, once I get through a month of : no crisps, no cakes, no biscuits, no sweets, no chocolate, no cheese and no desserts, low or no alcohol, low carbs : I am fine. Tiny portions compared to when I was younger. I exercise, my weight is mostly about what and how much I eat.

It is an enormous struggle. I feel your pain OP.

It's just joyless isn't it :(

Food is such a wonderful thing to experience and to cut out so many things is so difficult

Have you tested for gluten intolerance. DF-i-L put on loads of weight and discovered he had gluten intolerance. The weigth fell off him once he went gluten free. The body can hold a lot of water to protect itself from what it thinks is poison, which could account for 7lb gain over one slice of cake and two of pizza.
Could you try coming off the diet - not calorie controlling, and just eat lots of veg, fruit, eggs, lean meat and fish or tofu and beans if veggie/vegan for a few weeks, with small amounts of rice or buckwheat or potato and see if that helps.

I lost the wright by doing keto. Absolutely carb free.

How do you test for gluten intolerance?

I lost weight this year, wasn't on a diet but decided for health reasons to cut out as much UPF as possible. I still eat chocolate and crisps though as I'm not a saint, but so much of what we buy is often high in fat and rubbish that we don't realise. Maybe just adopt a different approach?

SwanRivers · 28/07/2024 11:00

When people say they can't eat what they want due to weight gain, it's nearly always due to portion size.

With the exception of two people who have medical problems, every overweight person I know and whose eating habits I've witnessed, eat very large portions.

They often don't realise it though, because they're comparing themselves to others who also eat very large portions.

So many people laugh at the serving suggestions on food packaging, but before the obesity pandemic, those were average portion sizes.

So people who stuck roughly to them, really could eat whatever they wanted.

fleurdolease · 28/07/2024 11:03

Totally get you OP. The only way I can lose weight is to control what I eat and monitor everything that goes in my mouth. As soon as I don't do that, the weight piles back on. Slimming world did work well for me because you don't have to track everything as long as you're eating free food but eating that way gets boring after a while, the novelty of eating boiled eggs and ham soon wears off!

flamebrick · 28/07/2024 11:38

Totally sympathise with you OP, I'm also on a 1200 kcal diet and boy, you do get tired of it. Don't worry about the 7lbs though — from your replies, it seems you're well-versed in CICO, so you know you've not eaten an excess 24500 kcal with some cake and pizza. It's water weight, probably exacerbated by the salt in the pizza. Frustrating, but will be just a blip in the long run. You can do this.

WmFnKdSg1234 · 28/07/2024 13:38

I find it is easier to cut out certain foods (treats) completely. It really is a spartan existence: food is everywhere, there are so many opportunities to eat the wrong things also between meals.

So much of our social interaction is built around foods with little or no nutritional value, or foods with high levels of salt, sugar and saturated fat, which are hugely addictive.

I am grateful that I can lose weight and mostly keep it off. Many post menopausal women I know struggle much more than I do. They lose half a stone then plateau. If they eat anything enjoyable like cake, chocolate or a pudding they are end up nearly back where they started. Even with lots of exercise (weight lifting, HIIT, running, etc).

BeaRF75 · 28/07/2024 13:40

So eat normally, and stop bothering about your weight.
Get rid of your scales.
Life's too short to be miserable.

Exactly the same op. I've struggled all my life. The only time my BMI has been in the healthy range and top end at that was when I was late teens, early twenties. I ate one meal a day. Dh, like yours, has never struggled. I don't drink alcohol, I don't drink fizzy drinks, I have a takeaway about once every three months, if that. I'm a size 16...I imagine those who don't struggle with their weight think I must gorge on food but I really don't. I don't even eat three meals a day

PetrichorSoul · 28/07/2024 13:44

I am keto.

It’s not a diet. It’s medicine.

Without it I’d be 150kg, diabetic, with PCOS, cancer (probably) and heart disease. I do it for prevention and for my hypothyroidism.

You need to change your labelling. “Why” is more important than the results. I’m still a good 10kg overweight because of said thyroid problems but I’m otherwise healthy. I don’t do it for weight loss because chasing weight loss is soul destroying.

I can list the symptoms that went away if it helps?

I was 19 stone at one point and have had a gastric sleeve.

So I can't just not worry about my wright. Or I will end up morbidly obese again.

I'm having sausage and mash later with peas and onions. I might take a pic and then you can tell me about my portion size? It's really hard to know isn't it? I'm 5'4 and a standard 14. What do you think?

StMarieforme · 28/07/2024 13:46

My entire life from 8yo. Now 61. Totally sucks.

I do well on keto but I find it extremely hard to find variety as I don't enjoy cooking. I like convenience (I have mental health issues and autistic children) so I have a lot going in already.

So I find it hard to stay on it long term.

BTW I gained 8 stone through 4 pregnancies and several breakdowns.

I'm more in control now but I know if I just throw away the scales I could easily be 2 stone heavier by Xmas.

It's a slippery slope.

OP posts:
Balloonhearts · 28/07/2024 13:54

Up your exercise. Not just walking but actual hard cardio. Weight loss is 80% diet, yes but you're eating well and it's not working. I weigh 16 stone, eat like shit because I have NO will power. I was 17.7 stone and dropped to 16 within 6 months of starting horse riding. No change in eating habits at all. Literally just the exercise. Because it's bloody hard work when your core and thighs just aren't used to working that hard.

WallaceinAnderland · 28/07/2024 13:54

Have you read Dr Jenkinson's Why We Eat Too Much?

It explains why our bodies gain weight so easily and what to do about it. Great book. You'll never need to diet again.

If I ate what I wanted, I'd probably become morbidly obese very quicky. It's sheer willpower that keeps me at a size 16.
