I am absolutely fucking sick of being on a 'diet'.

My husband is 150lbs soaking wet and eats whatever he wants, when ever he wants and never gains. He's never even been a slightly bit tubby.

I've been on a mission to lose a few stone and worked really fucking hard.

In the last week I've not felt well, kids been off so I've been lax. Absolutely nothing crazy or glutinous at all. Normal routine but...
A piece of cake one day. Couple of slices of pizza for tea. Just normal things.

I've gained 7lbs. 7 fucking lbs from just going back to eating 'normally' without stringent calorie counting at 1200

I'm so sick of it. I just want to live a normal life and not gain weight.

I've always been this way. I gain so easily.

It's a constant battle, I am 52 with an under active thyroid. I count calories but sometimes I think I should instead work on accepting a bigger body.

2AND2GC · 28/07/2024 14:12

I'm sorry I haven't got any words of wisdom for you, I just wanted to say 'same'. I lost two stone and now have to watch what I eat (and exercise) forever. The minute I just 'eat normally) the pounds leap on.

Eg we just had a week in Spain and I put on 7lbs. I really didn't go mad when I was there, either.

It's pants.

Cerialkiller · 28/07/2024 14:13

I sympathise. I used to keto to control my weight and it worked for 2 decades until it didn't. I used to like it because of the appetite suppression but since my second child it just doesn't work as well for me dispite having to get stricter each time for it to work, literally eating one healthy (mostly veg/salad and protein) meal a day and one healthy snack. I now usually lose 10lb then stall for week after week after week. Without the motivation of actual weightloss I can't resist the craving and eventually cave. I can resist 95% of the time until one day I just can't. My brain comes up with all kinds of justification 'your not that fat' 'just one day off' etc and the physical craving just becomes unbearable, I would compare it to physical pain and my husband has commented that my character changes and becomes erratic until I give in.

Low fat doesn't work, vegan/veggie doesn't work (gained weight on both dispite working full time in physical roles on my feet all day)

I have accepted I have an addiction and recently started mounjaro. It's been a real relief not to think about food any more, I'm just not interested, it means I'm cooking less, shopping cost has dropped considerably.

I have underactive thyroid too, have had test results for 4 years indicating but GP says its not bad enough to go on meds??

I WALK everywhere, do pilates, run about 10k a week, exercise has many benefits but weight loss isn't one of them.

I eat all healthy foods, for me to have white bread or a beer is RARE, I eat 'real food' and I watch portion control too and yet my bmi is nearly 25. I know that's not huge but when you're short, it looks plump. So I wonder if I have a low thyroid. I have v high cholesterol too, despite doing everything right.

Are there any natural ways to boost thyroid function?

WhichEllie · 28/07/2024 14:19

If you’ve not been feeling well and have been more sedentary than usual I am sure some of the weight is water retention/bloat that will go down.

I mean, a 7 pound gain would be 24,500 excess calories. Unless you’re completely delusional about your intake, it’s not likely you managed that.

I think that once you’re back in your routine you’ll find that it’s not nearly as much as you thought.

rainbowunicorn · 28/07/2024 14:20

You can't have gained 7lbs of fat in 1 week though. You would have had to eat 24500 calories on top of your maintenance calories to gain 7lb of fat. You may have some water weight, extra salt I'm the diet can cause this. As can being less active or not drinking enough water. You will naturally weigh different amounts on different days and even different times if the day but it isn't additional fat.

TakingTheHorseToFrance · 28/07/2024 14:26

Yes it does suck a bit. I lost 16lbs to bring me down to low 8 stone 2lbs. To get there I couldn't eat over 1200 cals.

My OH was using myfitness pal at the same time to loose a few lbs and at the end of day would often have 1200 cals to spare. It was so disheartening. I don't think there is any way around it. If I don't want to gain weight I have to most days keep under 1200 cals of healthy food and keep active.

but also my mindset has changed as someone who would eat biscuits and chocolate now imo a piece of cake a day is not normal eating. A piece of cake is a rare treat.

ClaraLaraBow · 28/07/2024 14:31

yeh. like pp, I've come to accep tthat my body doesn't need that much food. for 'brunch' i have ONE weetabix and a protein yogurt at about 11. then at 13.30 ish, a wrap with a lot of chopped up cucumber, tomato, tuna, maynonnaise but not too much, heaven for bid! no and then dinner would be salads, chickpeas, or sauteed onion with veg (courgettes, red peppers). snack on carrots, hummous, walnuts, black olives (but always mindful of moderation as well as nutrients). I could probably eat less because i'm still not exactly slim. I don't look overweight but my waist is a bit thick

hallyy · 28/07/2024 14:36

it totally sucks. I'm menopausal and have hashimotos so a double whammy in terms of losing weight. It's so hard.

CaptainCrieff · 28/07/2024 14:40

I didn’t exercise aside from walking a lot until I was mid 30s because of the “weight loss is 80% diet” thing but when I started running for mental health reasons I lost 3 stone. I got really into exercise then and lost a further 2 being a gym addict. I eat whatever I want and I still can’t quite believe it happened. Worth a go?!

GingerPirate · 28/07/2024 14:42

Wow.
Sorry you feel this way.
I know what you mean about your husband 😊
But definitely, go to the GP and if you have underactive thyroid (it does get better and worse),
ask for the medication.
It improves a lot, not just weight.
I agree about the dieting though, exercise isn't for everyone.

It's unlikely to be affecting your weight then.

I have a very underactive thyroid and I'm menopausal. Thankfully it hasn't affected mine at all.

It's not inevitable.

GP says not but all the groups I'm on say I should be medicated.

And when I had surgery abroad they put me on thyroid meds for the week I was there after they ran my bloods.

I was the same as you OP. I also believed that exercise made no difference. I've started walking around 6k a day every day and I am now losing weight even if I eat 1500 calories a day.

AbraAbraCadabra · 28/07/2024 15:06

OP it's very likely your thyroid. Try and see a different doctor. Hypothyroidism is often undertreated in the U.K.

If you can afford it I see a fantastic private endocrinologist if you can't get anywhere with a GP. Feel free to PM me.

SnapdragonToadflax · 28/07/2024 15:09

YANBU OP. It's shit. I can only lose weight by being hungry all the time (even after a meal). When I'm trying to lose weight I always go to bed starving.

And it's not possible to walk miles every day while also working full time and having young children. There is literally no spare time in the day. I manage to get to the gym twice a week, so long as work is reasonably calm and no-one is ill.

Wizardcalledoz · 28/07/2024 15:10

Diets dont work long term for the majority of people. Itshard work, but properly working through the intuitive eating programme has stopped me going through the binge/restrict/overeating cycle. Life After Diets the podcast has been very good for me to work through it. It is a long process to do properly, not a quick fix

YouJustDoYou · 28/07/2024 15:11

It's so mindnumbingly depressing isn't it? I had the same - weeks of dieting and eating carefully, walking further etc, and just 3 days relaxing SLIGHTLY in a row as guests over and bam, gained over 1kg. What's the point?

PrimalLass · 28/07/2024 15:13

YorkshireTeaBiscuits · 28/07/2024 10:44

Do you excercise? It doesn't matter what I eat because I walk several miles a day I burn off what I eat. You might find incorporating excercise as well as calorie counting is more effective.

Several miles a day will only burn a couple of hundred calories.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/07/2024 15:14

My DH at age 60 is like a whippet with a huge appetite. I eat much less than him and am a good few stones heavier. It is really not fair.

Wendycoping · 28/07/2024 15:20

PrimalLass · 28/07/2024 15:13

I do 6k a day and have lost 3lbs this week eating about 1500 calories a day. I spent months on 1200 caloroes a day and kept gaining and losing the same 2lb.

Works for me!

PrimalLass · 28/07/2024 15:24

Medical miracle.

hotsummerdayz · 28/07/2024 15:24

I've been overweight so can understand. I used to go on various diets and then gain the weight back.

The only thing that had worked for me is to eat a healthy diet and never deprive my self of small treats. I keep active like you OP. When I stopped going on various diets my weight stopped going up and down all the time and I maintained a healthy weight.

Life is too short not to enjoy food but everything in moderation

Wendycoping · 28/07/2024 15:27

PrimalLass · 28/07/2024 15:24

Medical miracle.

Well clearly not.

Walking 'several miles' would burn about 100 calories a mile. Walking 6k burns off almost 400 calories.
