If you could?

So if you could go back in time and change anything that's happened in history.

What would you change?

For me it would be to stop the assassination of JFK. I think if that day hadn't happened. The world would be a different place and American politics would be very different.

Anyone?

Another one on my list would be too stop the library in Alexandria (?sp) from burning. What was lost in there?

Having visited concentration camps and many areas of Europe where people were killed during WW2, I would of course, take out Hitler before he rose to power.

Bluebellsinthewind · 28/07/2024 00:01

@cupcaske123 I was thinking about Hitler and how many twists and turns of life got him to where he did. Starting from his birth, his assassination attempt etc.

The lifes and generations lost 😪 what could those people have brought to the world and the lifes of others 💐

I'd stop the meteor that took out the dinosaurs hitting earth, it would be nice to see what those guys could have achieved given more time.

Bluebellsinthewind · 28/07/2024 00:10

@NuffSaidSam imagine if they didn't go extinct and were still around. Popping to Tesco with dinosaurs wondering around.

I know. I'd take out Stalin, King Leopold and Mao Ze Dong while I was at it.

I love questions like this!

I’d stop the guy who wrote Malleus Maleficarum as it precipitated the witch trials. Horrible book.

I’d make Boudicca win her war with the Romans.

I’d stop Stephen Laurence being murdered.

I’d protect Alan Turing. He should have got a medal for the part he played in ending the war. Instead he killed himself after being horrendously treated, for being gay.

Bluebellsinthewind · 28/07/2024 00:39

@cupcaske123 I've not heard of Mao before, will need to look up. What did he do?

@Apolloneuro Aww, thank you. This is my mind a lot, just pondering things. Then of course, I end up down the rabbit hole looking things up.

I've never heard of Malleus or Alan Turing. Agree with Stephen Lawrence, I feel much more changes should have come that didn't. I vaguely remember Budicca.

Your post has minded me of another one. To stop Brian Epstein from ending his life. The stories he could have told. Not to mention maybe radical changes in music/media?

Alan Turing and his team invented the machine that cracked the enigma code and intercepted German messages. There’s a good film about him with Benedict Cumberbatch called The Imitation Game.

cupcaske123 · 28/07/2024 00:44

Mao formed the People's Republic of China in 1949 and it's estimated that he killed up to 80 million people.

BluPeony · 28/07/2024 00:44

Arm the Native Americans against invasion.

They are...

Bluebellsinthewind · 28/07/2024 01:07

@cupcaske123 80 million! Will need to read up on him. 1949 wasn't that long ago.

@Apolloneuro thank you. Will watch the film, sounds really interesting.

@BluPeony thought provoking for sure.

Another interesting fact about Turing (I don’t know if it’s just an urban myth) is that the company Apple is named in honour of him.

He invented one of the first computers and killed himself with an apple injected with poison. The Apple logo is an apple with a bite out of it.

XelaM · 28/07/2024 09:37

To stop idiotic Nikolai II of Russia mobilising troops and starting World War I. It's the war that changed the world.

Bluebellsinthewind · 28/07/2024 12:54

@Apolloneuro really ? Thanks for sharing, that's a great bit of information.

@XelaM it really did change every aspect of everything.

This thread has given me lots of new information to look up. Thank you all.

Another one from me, would be to stop Ann Boleyn meeting Henry the 8th. It would be very interesting to see what life would be like without the path those two took.

@cupcaske123 is right - it has to be Hitler.

A lot else could do with being fixed as well, but that's got to come first.

Without World War I and what followed there would be no Hitler.

Or.. if Germany had actually won World War I (which they very nearly did) history would have been completely different.

NewName24 · 28/07/2024 14:59

Like @cupcaske123 , if we were looking at one thing, then I think removing someone evil who caused so much horror, like Hitler or Mao, would be FAR better than preventing the assassination of just one person (sad though that was).

Confused

I could have chosen Apartheid or the Crusades or the black death or the invention of the atomic bomb or 9/11, none of which would have happened if other things hadn't happened before them, but I went with getting rid of Hitler, who was the personification of evil in the 20th Century.

shellyleppard · 28/07/2024 16:23

@Bluebellsinthewind alan Turing was a brilliant mathematician. He helped invent the enigma machine (i think). However he was persecuted for being a homosexual and he took his own life. (Apologies if I'm wrong my history isn't 100 💯 per cent)

shellyleppard · 28/07/2024 16:25

I would have stopped John Lennon being assinated. Failing that stopping Hitler being born

Cattery · 28/07/2024 16:28

I’d have told Diana to put her seat belt on

He was forced to take the same drugs that are now used as puberty blockers.

One more relatively recent thing I’d do is stop Stonewall changing itself into a trans rights group. If they’d retained their focus on LGB rights the past few years might have been very different.

thursdaymurderclub · 28/07/2024 16:31

nothing! i would change absolutely nothing because i would not dare risk losing what i have today!

i would take every beating again, i would take every 'uncle' again.. i would endure my entire life exactly as it has been... because i know the outcome, and i quiet like how my life is right at this moment.
