Did UK bed sizes used to be different?

When I was young, in the 70s/80s I learnt that British bed sizes were:
2'6" small single
3' single
4' small double
4'6" double
5' Queen
5'6" King
6' Super King

But now it seems that King size beds are only 5 feet wide. Which is not helpful when trying to find hotels with decent size beds.

Does anyone else remember this or have I completely imagined it?!

We've just bought a super king. The King was 5ft we bought that 10 years ago, before that was a 5ft queen maybe 20 years ago, but I can't think further back than that.

I don’t remember queen size beds ever being a thing. Don’t know about the 80s, but I remember my parents upgrading from a double to a king size bed in the 90s so king size has been 5ft since then at least.

I always thought a UK Queen size bed was smaller than a double?

I thought queen sized was 4' and king has always been 5'. We bought a kind sized 20+ years ago and was definitely 5'

No idea not know ikea are not aligned!

MissyB1 · 27/07/2024 21:56

A queen bed is a small double isn't it?

Bandina · 27/07/2024 21:59

I was not aware of queen sized beds ever having been a thing here.

4'6 I would call a standard double. King is 5' wide but also 6 inches longer than a standard double.

CheeseWisely · 27/07/2024 22:02

AFAIK a King is 5 feet wide, but often in hotels they use zip-links which are two 3 foot singles that zip together making a 6 foot double.

Yes we had that in our Greek hotel last week. It was fab having so much space in the bed, dh kept moaning that I was miles away from him - errm yes.... 😜

CheeseWisely · 28/07/2024 09:13

@MissyB1 Ha! We're staying in a rental at the moment while some work is done to our home and there's a superking here. DH is gutted that we're miles apart, I'm delighted to have the space GrinGrin

Doggymummar · 28/07/2024 09:47

The 6ft bed is amazing but it's had to reach oh to pike him when he's snoring. Although his sister yesterday said to take a fork to bed.

Thank you for your replies, although I'm not sure anyone's recollection is going back quite as far as mine!

A Queen has always been 4'. I think they refer to it differently in the USA. Maybe that's what you're thinking of?

2'6" small single
3' single
4' Queen
4'6" double
5' King
6' Super King

This matches my childhood recollection. I slept in a queen bed at Granny's house and it wasn't as big as a double.

I think IKEA changed their bed sizes in the UK to reflect UK norms. They used to sell square pillows and pillowcases iirc and that changed some (a long) time ago when they realised they didn't sell here.

I'm looking for single beds now and I always though 3ft was a large single and 2'6'' was standard. Child of the 80s, thought they must have changed but if you remember them that was maybe not.
