Offered a job in a school on Tuesday and when my future line manager (teacher) rang me with the good news I asked if she knew my start and finish times as will need to book ds 10 into before /after school club.
She said the office manager would ring me.
They broke up for the summer Wednesday so now I'm not sure of anything.
Possibility she might work in holidays and just think no urgency as September start?

l’d expect office manager or business manager to be in over holidays at some point, do you have an email address for them?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/07/2024 13:30

Yes I emailed Friday

It should be set out in your contract of employment when you receive it

Which may not be until September.

Are you part time? If part time, they might not have worked out your teaching timetable yet, many of the schools I’ve worked in do not publish timetables until September. You should at least know the contracted time ie 0.5 or whatever.

Otherwise, if full time, then have a look on their website for pupil start and finish times and assume that you will need to be in school at least half an hour either side, probably longer some night for meetings or training.

Good luck in the new job.

Unprofessional though?
I don't even know what my first day date is

What job is it?

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/07/2024 15:08

Teaching assistant

I imagine that the term dates will be on the website, so that should alleviate one concern. If they’re having inset days at the start of term, I think you’d be expected to be there for those.

My guess would be that they’ll be sorting out timetables and allocations on those inset days, but I agree that you should be entitled to more certainty and clarification.

Was it a conditional offer - we would wait for your references and dbs to come back before officially offering you the job at my school - even though references are requested before interview sometimes they don't always come back in time

SaveloyDip · 27/07/2024 15:16

In every school I have ever worked in, the business manager works a 52 week contract, so I would expect they will be in over the school holidays (apart from any annual leave they may have taken)

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/07/2024 15:18

No they hadn't requested references prior to interview and when the teacher phoned she said we'd like to offer you the position and that office manager would ring re contract, hours etc

I bet that is what they are waiting for

Headteachers usually work in the holidays too - even if they have a bit of rime off, they are always contactable on email.can you ask them if they have received a ref request? Plus they need to get your enhanced dbs too - if anything comes up on that, they have to know before sending your contract. Easy for me to say but l wouldn't panic.

Most of the HR staff don’t work TTO.

And of course many of the TTO staff like teachers work in the holidays too.

I wouldn’t worry about it.
They will definitely let you know what the start date is etc.

Look on the school website calendar and it’ll give you a rough idea.

Congratulations on your new job 😄
