Reversing car into drive from busy road

I normally indicate then sort of swing out to reverse in but it's really hard as cars just overtake so I can't complete the manoeuvre.

Today a bloke stopped his car to tell me I need to use hazard lights to indicate that I am reversing in. Is this what you have to do?

Yes, I use flashers for this.

I slow down and indicate, then swing out with flashers, which I think helps the cars behind realise I need the turning circle. I am not sure what the Highway Code says about signalling your intention but it seems logical; lots of people don’t back into a driveway though, which is definitely wrong

Using hazards when reversing isn't in the Highway Code so I don't think he was right if he implied it's required.

Doveyouknow · 26/07/2024 19:47

Surely indicators plus reversing lights is a big enough clue?

AnOldCynic · 26/07/2024 19:53

You shouldn't be reversing out of your drive into the road.

Is there a reason you can't reverse on to your drive and then drive out forward?

AnOldCynic · 26/07/2024 19:54

Ah sorry. You are reversing in!

She is (reversing onto the drive)

Sorry, cross post!!

I have to do this on my mums road and always use hazards. With just indicators I think it would be confusing as I could be pulling into the on street parking bay or the upcoming side road. Hazards make it obvious you need space.

Surely the reversing lights are a big enough clue that you are reversing.

123ZYX · 26/07/2024 19:57

But with hazards on you can't see which way you're intending to go. Reversing lights plus indicator gives a much better idea of what your intention is

Reugny · 26/07/2024 19:59

You know what?

Try it and see if people give you the room.

Unfortunately people do things when driving that aren't in the highway code and they work.

RexKwando · 26/07/2024 20:03

Nah tell the busybody to go away. You can reverse on or reverse off however you like. Nobody is ever going to care.

Nitgel · 26/07/2024 20:26

I will try the hazard lights I suppose. Its so unclear what I'm meant to do. There was a build up of traffic whilst I was parked in my drive, due to him holding up the traffic to tell my to use mh hazard lights.
