"Gen X Rise"

Yappucino · 26/07/2024 09:26

I was born in 1980 so I'm technically right on the edge of gen X and millennials. I identify more with gen X though.
Has anyone who is on social media noticed this trend going around lately of Gen X posting about how they should "rise"? What the fuck are we riding against?

People do all sorts of weird crap on t'net.

Screamingabdabz · 26/07/2024 09:32

Rising out of bed and doing a job properly would be a good start.

OppsUpsSide · 26/07/2024 09:34

I’ve seen this, I think it’s about rising up against the ‘wokeism’ of the younger generations - but I’m not sure

JohnWickAteMyHamster · 26/07/2024 09:37

Rising up against Gen Z 🙄 I've only seen American posts about it so I'm not entirely sure, perhaps to do with US politics?
Gen X is the generation that people always forget - younger generations always talk about millennials or boomers, so Gen X are rising up 🙄🙄🙄
It's all bullshit, no?

cupcaske123 · 26/07/2024 09:40

Ok so I did some digging. Apparently there's an Eminem song which talks about Gen Z trying to cancel him. So this has to do with rising against cancel culture.

Pedestriancrossing · 26/07/2024 09:42

Well I'm gen X (older end) and have no issue with wokeism if that means not being racist, homophobic, not being a gobshite etc. Also I haven't seen anything about gen X rising or indeed doing anything.

lawnseed · 26/07/2024 09:43

It's just meaningless internet fluff.

Mrsjayy · 26/07/2024 09:47

It doesn't really mean anything does it ? Its just Internet nonsense nobody is rising it's just gen x(ers) having a bit of a laugh.

DazedandConfused1234 · 26/07/2024 09:52

Most of the Gen X stuff I see is all about how we used to bounce round in cars with no seat belts or play on building sites. All about how tough we are supposedly, and not to mess with us (or call us boomers). Mainly jokey stuff though and quite biased to the US. Has shit got serious? 😂

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/07/2024 10:06

There has been a spate of people who make money from this sort of thing posting about how Gen X should be attacked/criticised/etc (not because of anything in particular, it was just to get more views and follows, etc, like any of these things) and then it grew with responses, etc, where because of the trope about Gen X being tougher, more resilient and fully able to move between technology and analogue/practical things, it takes the form of 'awakening the beast'.

So just more manufactured internet stuff, really - nothing meaningful.

ScottishScouser · 26/07/2024 10:08

I'm gen X and we are the ones normally keeping the country/society going at the moment. And yes, we're normally forgotten about.

Titsywoo · 26/07/2024 10:37

I think it is to do with a video on Tiktok a couple of months ago where a girl was saying that Gen X are the worse generation ever. Normally with this weird obsession with the generations at the moment people slag off boomers, millennials etc but Gen X are ignored. So now Gen X people are saying we have to defend ourselves or something.

The whole thing with boomers are evil, gen x are cool but sadistic, gen z are snowfalkes etc is just odd. Not sure what the whole obsession is about - we are just people shaped slightly differently by our experiences after all.

Yeah, all those 44-59 year olds just lazing around in bed...

Moonlightstars · 06/01/2025 23:10

Are we just cool and get to still take drugs occasionally?

I was working on the basis of being a cool parent - I like to think we have done a pretty good job of parenting our liberal tolerant and accepting Gen Z kids who do not drink or take drugs much and have rediscovered things like knitting and crochet. And actually care about the planet. And lots of Gen Z actually get on with their parents unlike my generation
and they think our music is pretty cool we have a lot of Depeche Mode and the Smiths/Cure in our house
My main job now is to help them buy houses if I can

Oldenpeculiar · 06/01/2025 23:57

Where's this obsession come from? I think I'm gen X/Millennial - born in 79, but I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean or why I should care?
It's all a bit confusing, but I did remind my gen Z (I think) child, when she was taking the piss out of me struggling with some technology, that I taught her how not to shit herself in public, so she could kindly stfu (she's an adult).
🤷🏼‍♀️

I love that being a liberal parent means accepting that our kids don't drink much and prefer the gym to raving!

I see this is quite an old thread, but 'Gen X Rise' has passed me by. That's the thing about Gen X - we don't usually get sucked into social media trends 😃

No idea why a pp would think we are lazing in bed and not working - we are pretty much all doomed to working till the age of 67 at least - aware future generations will have to work even longer, but even late Boomers who are still working are in the same boat as us with regard to pension age. DH is 63 and won't get his for another 4 years.

I need to get up actually. It's 8:13. I need a piss.

Mind you, I'll go back to bed with a coffee I think. It's cold and boring outside today.

Fromage · 07/01/2025 08:25

Rise?

Can we do it slowly, going 'oof!' a lot, please?

Most of the GenX/Millennial/Gen Z stuff I see is hilarious.

I'm Gen X and I really can't be bothered. Leave me alone. I'm watching Magnum and eating Fruit Salads and Blackjacks and dreaming of my space hopper and Look In. I will not be rising out of my comfy chair until absolutely necessary (usually for a wee.)

Happyinarcon · 07/01/2025 09:12

It’s all divide and conquer crap

Yes my dcs are born between late 90s to 2000 and into my music as well as other stuff. I don't have to worry about money though they have plenty. They've done better than I have. We own our home but at their age I wasn't as wise. My dps weren't as encouraging.
